hi guys,

ad my father in laws work they have 5 computers and they want to share the outlook contacts and be able to send and recieve (from the same account) on each computer...

is this possible or do you need some sort of exchange server software?

He might want to look at Windows Small business server.
That would give him an e-mail server, Firewall, SQL server plus the other benefits of running a server. It is also not too bad as far as pricing goes neither

As for send and receive from the same account, do you mean the 5 people use the one e-mail address?

yeah all use the same address, contacts, everythin... this possible without going throught the server route which he really doesnt need?

It is but only by way of a multitude of kludges and hacks :)

The most obvious way would be to set up some sort of IMAP server (there was a recent thread on this very topic) to share the mail. Sharing contacts will be a bit more difficult unfortunately. You really need some form of Directory Service such as Exchange, AD or LDAP tbh. You could try something like:

Not free unfortunately but cheaper (and less of a learning curve) than setting up an Exchange server
