My first time ever. Got all the bits and bobs. First alteration and everything went fine. No blow ups! Temps all cool.

The guide says to:

1. Increase the FSB by 5MHz.
2. Reduce the multiplier and RAM divider if requried so that both are at stock speeds or slightly less.

Now:
On my machine I have:
system memory multiplier (spd) (set to auto) with various options ranging from auto and 4.0-2.0
CPU host Frequency (Mhz) 200
CPU clock ratio 10x.
memory frequency (Mhz) 800 800

On changing the CPU frequency to 205mhz the memory frequency goes from 800 800 to 800 820.

My questions are:
1) Is what I am changing what is listed in the guide. I don't want to be tweaking the wrong things!
2) When I try and reduce the system memory multiplier the options vary wildly between 800 420 (on 2.00) or 800 840 (on 4.0 or auto). I can't get them the same speeds.

hi mate - post up your full specs and i will see if i can offer some advice

i had some major help this weekend involving my voltages etc

seems like your changing the right things.

in a nutshell, download prime95 and core temp from this thread.

up your fsb 5-10mhz boot into windows, run prime95 for 10-15 mins, if all goes well, go back into the bios and up again by 5-10mhz.
Repeat until failure, once you fail up your vcore onto the next notch or if your motherboard lets you enter it manually, by 0.05v.
Go back into windows and run prime95(note: once you've upped your voltage, its worth running coretemp to keep an eye on temperatures, no higher than 65 at load)

This is really basic, i can give a bit more detail once i know the details of your setup(cpu/mem/mobo/etc) i'm not too sure about your fsb:mem ratio, you should be able to have that at 1:1, seems odd that you can't. But until we know your motherboard, we can't help :)

keep us posted, p.s. first thing you should learn about overclocking(if you haven't already) is how to reset your bios :P just in case;)
 
Yeah got the programs. After playing with it a bit. I umped it up to 250 x 10 so I'm running it at 2.5. The temperature is going and staying around 48-50C when I put it under the tests. Idle its doing about 30C.

That was fine for 16 odd minutes. I'm anxious to put it up any higher incase it blows up! I have no idea how hot they are supposed to be clocked to. Why might I want the voltage increased? Does that reduce the temperature?

My motherboard is:Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L Intel P35 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2

when you up your fsb to a certain mhz, it wont have enough power to supply your cpu. When this happens you'll get a failure, it won't POST(beeps at boot) or a lovely bluescreen.
Upping the voltage makes your pc more stable, and you can continue to up the fsb more, getting higher clocks.

With temps only at 50 load you can go a lot more, 70 maximum, 65 better. in my opinion at load. Are you running the stock cooler on your cpu? whats happening with the memory freq? is that still ascending?
more voltage = more heat = better cooling.
 
have you changed your cooler on your cpu from the boxed one? and memory frequency, in your screenshots 'System Memory Multiplier'
 
No my cooler is the one that came with it. I guess I should be using that freezer thingy.
The memory multiplier has only 8 options. I have mine set to the one that make the two numbers closest together as per the guide. They don't increase (well not yet).
Auto, 2.0, 2.4 2.5, 3.0, 3.2, 3.33, 4.0
 
you have an arctic freezer pro cooler? if you have, its worth installing. if your memory is not increasing then your ok. keep upping your fsb, when it fails up the vcore, if your at 50c load at 2.5, i think 3ghz should be achievable without too much effort :)

I don't have an artic cooler no. I think I should probably get one though.
When I have it on certain settings, like right now the speed at 2.85 the multiplier on cpuz shows it jumping between 6x and 10x. So sometimes I'm getting 1.7 and sometimes 2.85 Ghz!Why is that and what do I do to correct it? Temps all still fine.
 
ah, speedstep. you need to disable it in your bios. basically to save power when your computer idles, the mobo lowers the multiplier so your not running as quickly.
look here about speedstep/c1e/cool n quiet.

should be just a setting you can enable/disable, so look around your bios
 
Seems like it is coping pretty well. I do have 2 extra fans inside my case as well as the fan on the CPU. So despite overclocking now at 3.1 the temps in the short term are 50-54. Mid 30s when on idle. I have to say I was quite shocked when I first used speedfan because it says my graphics card is running at 56C. I have never overclocked that or done anything.

I think I could push the CPU further, but I don't want to burn it out for a few extra benchmarks. If it can remain stable at 3.1 when I do some long tests tomorrow I'll be content. I'll post the screenies if its still good after the test. Thanks a lot for your help. You've been really awesome.
