Have always fancied living abroad at some point in my life, and recently have been thinking more about it; fiancée is amicable to the idea as well. I have a lot of family in Canada, cousins, second cousins etc, mainly scattered around B.C. but centred in Calgary.

So, in short, would you consider emigrating, or have you? Where did you go, what was your experience, etc etc :)

I lived in Saudi Arabia for about 5 years as a child.
Though I can't say it was amicable country in the world to live in it certainly broadened my horizons and gave me some stories to tell!

In March I'm giving up on the UK and moving to Italy for a couple of years, though I'll probably end up in Australia eventually..

Got my AOC through for getting my wife and I skilled worker visas into Canada. Waiting list of about three years but that does me fine. Gives me a few years to brush up on some new skills although I've pretty much got a job transfer arranged within the company.

Yeah, I have been going through the process of emigrating to America for a while now but don't plan to leave until my internship in London finishes. i have family that has emigrated to mainly Australia and NZ don't fancy that part of the world myself so chose America instead.

Okay - thanks for the replies so far.

What are your reasons for leaving, and what do you perceive as being the benefits of living somewhere else?

Well i have always wanted to live in America and have studied there for a year as part of my course, it also has much better job prospects and higher earning potential for my career

I've emigrated to Switzerland, before that I worked in California.

I can't stand the UK as a place to live or work. For vacations back home to the highlands of Scotland it can't be beat though.

Some reasons for me:
Higher pay
less tax
better living standards
lower cost of living
better climate
better food
safer living environment
better education system
Better research opportunities and better funded research institutes
better recreation opportunities
no binge drinking culture
no chavs
better public transport
interesting culture and language differences

I moved here to the US 2.5 years ago and haven't looked back. Don't get me wrong, I love many things about the UK and am proud to be British.....but as a place to live it's just awful. My wife is American (we met while she was studying in the UK) and the main reasons for us leaving were: House prices & value for money, health system stuck in the dark ages and the current yobbish youth culture.

At the time it was the hardest decision of my life to leave the UK. But it turned out it was also the best decision of my life.

EDIT: Agree with the post above. The Scotish Highlands can't be beaten. The Rocky Mountains is the only thing to come close.
