I'm planning on riding the new Emirates cable car in London. What advice do you have? I guess I need a polariser filter to get a good image through glass? I would need to experiment with exposure compensation as so much sky could cause the meter to render the foreground too dark? Lastly I would need to use the highest aperture to increase depth of field so put it into AP mode and let the camera select the appropriate shutter speed?

Yep, and if you have a hood on your lens you can stick it right up against the glass to further minimise reflections.

You might be better off in manual mode.

If you use a high aperture to get the maximum front to back depth of field, chances are its going to require a slower shutter speed. Given that you are in a Gondola, chances are that anything other than a fast-ish shutter speed is going to cause motion blur due to movement.

Go when the sky is awesome, maybe sunset or something. I work next door but I can't be arsed waiting around for the light to be right :)

Here's a low effort shot - f/7.1 at 1/800s

Thats a great shot! Might need to buy some ND filters to help with the sky.

If I start off with >f7 and see what the camera suggests.

A rubber hood if you are serious about it however the cost of that for just one shot seems a little... Could just use your normal hood and your hand. Don't worry about a small* aperture really, choose the best image quality for your lens, so probably around f/7.1-f/8. No need to worry much about depth of field as almost everything will be at infinity if you are using a remotely wide lens at that distance . Shoot away from the sun and using a polariser to get a deep sky you shouldn't have any exposure problems .

* Aperture is a fraction one over the number. f/1.8 is much larger than f/11 for example. For a practical example hold down the depth of field preview button a s you remove your lens to allow you to see the aperture size you have selected. The hole for f/1.8 is much bigger than f/11. it's why you get much more light with f/1.8.

How much is it go on one these things??, the missus wants to go next weekend to give it a try. I heard you can use your oyster card unless im mistaken??.

Also is it quite busy?? ie are there long que's.

Sorry for the hijack.

It's slightly busy during rush hour. Queues no longer than 5 mins and you'll need to share with others.

Off peak though you're pretty much guaranteed your own lift with zero queues.
