**EMPIRE TOTAL WAR**

Yeah i have managed to use the resave reload tactic to get me past many crashes upto the point where i have conquered everything but two provinces and can i hell as like manage to take them without a crash completely frsutrating. I think if i manage to take those last two i will call it quits on this game and bin it as it has been without doubt the most frustrating annoying game i have played in living memory.

Although as you say, the resaving can work for a few turns before the crashing continues. I've also tried (if possible), if I know I'm at a battle thats going to make the game crash. Surrender/withdraw for a turn, then reattack and the crash can also sometimes disappear :)

Cheeky post but I'm not trawling through hundreds of posts.... what's the general feeling to this game? A worthy purchase or is it in dire need of a good patch, must buy or what?

Yeah done that as well absolutely stupid though that we have to miss out on the so called experience in order to finish the game since sega took over the total war franchise they have really cocked it up :(. Being honest Chong i would say wait a while before buying and see if they can sort out most of the bugs that are still in it right now despite the patches it still feels to me like an unfinished game that was rushed out to make cash.

I'd wait for another 2-3 "big" patches, as the game as many game breaking faults, other than the crashing mentioned above.

I first played this game on xp 32bit and had loads of crashes. I changed to vista64 and only had 1 crash. It does run a lot smoother but then again its got 2 extra gig of ram to work with.

Yeah as I feared, it's always the case with such games and they need several patches before the game can be fully enjoyed.

Think I'll wait a few months and see how things have gone... cheers fella's :)

I've found that when you open the saved game, if you resave right away and then reload from the new save. It stops the crashing sometimes if your lucky. Give it a try and see if it works :)

Anyone know when the next offical patch is out?, as its been a few weeks since the last one, and I really need to finish conquering the rest of Europe on my long comapaign!

Ta I'll give it a go :) really enjoying ETW just wish they fixed the bugs!

edit: no luck =(

Well into campaign mode now and only had it crash twice since purchase, so I'm quite surprised to read a number of you are having real big issue's with game stability, even with some very high end systems. :(

I didn't have any crashes until they started patching the damn thing :P now they've got a community beta testing team I hope the next few patches will iron everything out!

I'm getting very frustrated by this game - Mainly because naval battles are so much harder than land battles. Ideally I'd have land battles on very hard difficulty setting and Naval battles on medium difficulty setting - the compromise of choosing the hard setting means I've only won one out of 10 naval battles and every land battle is a walk over. My only workable option at the moment it to let the game auto resolve Naval battles and play on v hard. but I feel like I'm missing out... Are there any mods that let you split out naval and land difficulty levels. Either that or does anyone have any tips on winning naval battles on the v hard settings?

Bring bigger boats, take command of your favourite or admiral and autoaim the rest.

One or two lines, two preferable. Keep your highest rate ships towards the end of your lines, once you have passed their fleet with the ships on autofire moral should be lower... giving your 1st-3rd rates at the back a good chance of making them rout with the large volleys.

I find it too hard in a turn-a-bout battle to control more than 3 ships manually. Maybe its just me, but I cba hitting pause every two seconds.

Thanks Biohazard, that's pretty much been my tactics so far. What type of shot do you use? Do you ever manage to come out of the battle with more ships (or even sam no of ships) than you went into it when on v hard setting?

<<Edit>>
Just realised that's actually the opposite of my tactics - i've usually been sending in the most powerful ships first with weaker ships behind...

I find the naval battles tedious at best and always auto-resolve. Playing with hard campaign & hard battle difficulty atm and as you've found I can win land battles.

There are a coupla mods over a twcentre.com that alter the naval aspect of the game haven't installed them myself but you might want to give them a try. I think their part of the Darthvader mod but not sure 100%

EDIT:
My bad it should be twcenter.net

Cannon shot mostly, I go for hull punctures certainly with my heavy rates. Might set a couple of ships to chain shots at the start, but back onto cannon.

On v hard no, only had a couple of games at that setting and have scrapped out with only losing three or four ships but it depends on who and what you are up against. Also, get naval technologies quickly! Shortened reloading times etc all help.

I tend try keep a good mix of 1/2's and 4/5's for a mix of power and speed. Zig zag if you are having trouble getting wind in your sails, or turn around all together and try and swarm them when they catch up. Chase down routing ships if you can, to save them regrouping and entering the fight again.

Other than that, it depends on the fight.

As for ship positions, its only because I have read that once a trail of ships have passed their line firing off, depending on the location of their admiral mind, moral will hopefully be low enough for your heavy rates coming up to blooter them.

Any recommendations on a good AI mod?
I am finding the game growing pointless due to almost complete lack of AI a lot of the time.It seems largely incapable of implementing any kind of coherant plan.
The last town I assaulted, the defenders just stood in the fort while I pounded with artillery, not even reacting when I scaled the walls.
Then when they assaulted one of my towns I was able to hold off a force about 3 times biggers by suicide calvalry unit charging his artillery. Without artillery the AI appeared completely stumped even though it had nearly 1000 men advantage, and also forgot about grappling hooks and just milled about the walls. Eventually my 4 defending units ran out of ammo and even after I abandoned the walls entirely AI didn't try and assault.

AI grenadiers also appeared incapable of what to do about militia in a building so just stood there, despite having bloody grenades.

In MTW the poor AI was hidden somewhat due to emphasis on close combat, so charging around kind of works. However in Empire it is more obviously ineffective.

Two main ones to choose from, DarthMod and Imperial Splendour. Both can potentially make the game a lot more difficult, its close between them though. Best thing to do is to try one out for a bit, and then try the other out for a bit and see which you prefer.

Thanks, will probably try splendour first (on assumption that darth may be better and I'll stick with that).
Darth on MTW2 was good (AI absolutely owned me first time I tried a Darth battle - this huge block of infantry charging en-masse while calvalry carried out a sweeping pincer)
