Okay this is a subject that intrest me the most, Empires :)

Which was the most succesful empires in world history?

Empires: 1 to 40 by amount of land under its control; amount of people under its control

1. Empire (noun): a state that extends its dominons over other nations, cultures, ethnicites different, foreign, and seperate from itself/its center of power; an Empire must have an age of atleast 150 years between its rise and fall

2. For example, neither the Mongols nor the Greeks under Chingis Khan/Alexander are considered empires because they broke off within a few years of their leaders death. A seperate list must be made for the likes of Chinngis Khan, Asoka, Chandragupta Maurya, Kubilai Khan, Harsha, Alexander, Qin Shi Huang, and the Atilla who were all fantastic Conquerors, but their soverignty had not survived for 150 years prior to their deaths.

3. Modern day Empires like the American Empire and Indian Empire are not counted because the extent of their history is not known (what will happen in the future?)

The British Empire comprised the dominions, colonies, protectorates, mandates, and other territories ruled or administered by the United Kingdom (UK), that had originated with the overseas colonies and trading posts established by England in the 17th century. At its height it was the largest empire in history and, for over a century, was the foremost global power. By 1922, the British Empire held sway over a population of about 458 million people, one-quarter of the world's population,[1] and covered more than 14,000,000 square miles (36,260,000 km²): approximately a quarter of Earth's total land area.[2] As a result, its political, linguistic and cultural legacy is widespread. At the peak of its power, it was often said that "the sun never sets on the British Empire" because its span across the globe ensured that the sun was always shining on at least one of its numerous territories.

Not bad for a county our size eh? We as a nation have achieved so much, are you proud to be British? I am know to be far to Paiotric hence this thread! :D :D

It's times like these I think "Rule Britannia" should be played in the background when the page loads.

The list is flawed because it only measures by land and people, it’s what the empire achieved that counts. :p

Completely agree with that. For instance the Egyptian empire/civilisation or some of the South American tribes which built an empire were pretty remarkable.

No point, there is no British Empire any more, just a small island, of which a good portion of the population isn't or doesn't consider themselves British.

What do they consider them self’s then? Of course they are British, well yes the empire is no more but its reign and influence is still seen to this day, safe to say it’s the last of the large Empires.

to be fair, proportionately a lot of those lesser empires may have been bigger than the more modern ones as america hadn't been discovered.

added to that the british empire was based largely on quashing people with spears and cow hide shields (notice we lost our colonies in america for example, where the 'enemy' were on a level pegging). i think the more ancient empires achieved vastly more with the resources and manpower of the time, can you imagine moving 5000 soldiers across the globe at the height of the british empire compared to the Roman empire? and the sheer cost of keeping massively bigger armies needed for continuous occupation.

We lost our colonies in America because of those dam French winning it for them! :p ;)

I think the Roman Empire should be higher up - they might not of had a quarter of the land on earth like us, but they had most of europe which is the most important piece of land in the world.

ahaha :D (they'd be turning in their graves if they could see it today :p)

considering the entire roman empire also sprang up from one city not an entire country i quite agree, that and a nice chunk off the top of africa.

They had New Netherland which was given to us in the Treaty of Westminster in 1674.

Says it all: http://www.coins.nd.edu/ColCoin/ColCoinIntros/NNHistory.html

one thing i do remember is that the dutch brought the horrible scalp skinning habit with them and the plains Indians picked it up from them (which was then used to accuse them of being barbaric :p)

The british empire was much bigger?

the british empire had more easily conquerable area:(
