surely that means should a employee buy products during his lunch (like i do) then you have all his credit card details etc etc . ?

I believe employer needs to have evidence of a serious breach of the rules before they start delving in.

Note that the collected data must be held securely in accordance with the DPA, as you will inevitably collect data which is liable for protection under the DPA.

Even if the company policy forbids it - or even has a clause allowing snooping - your straying into extremely dodgy territory - snooping/intercepting and especially storing the contents of emails and IM, etc. traffic can potentially lead you to court and even jail.

Its one thing to see that a user is accessing a certain site at the internet gateway and use the company disciplinary policy - quite another to use invasive snooping.

i.e. if you were to log and store an employee's credit card details and someone else got their hands on the details and commited fraud and gets caught - theres a good chance you will go down with them.

This is one of the worst things I've ever heard, it's bordering on perverse. I am also sure what you are proposing is close to being illegal.

Why would you want to log every keystroke a member of your staff makes and read all their emails? Does your ex-wife or someone you secretly fancy work for you or something?

If a company I work for ever tried to introduce such extreme measures I'd tell them where to go and I'm sure most right minded individuals would do the same. I'd leave the creepy boss to "monitor" his kids..

Or here's an idea - acknowledge it's a management problem and not a technical one and get the relevant people to show some management ability in relation to their staff. There's sod all point blocking facebook or whatever else, people will access it on their phone or find some other way to waste time if they want.

The very idea of logging people's keystrokes for business purposes is comic. Seriously? Your staff are that distrusted? Why do you employ them if you can't trust them enough to not have log their every keystroke.

Can i just I don't work for this company, I've just been asked to source the software to use, hence why I was asking for suggestions in here of what your company uses.

Cheers

REFOG Employee Monitor

We tested this and a another piece of software I can't remember the name of. It logged all-most everything. But with the 10 users we tested it with it proved very time consuming attempting to identify the items we needed, thankfully HR decided we didn't need that level of logging, so now we have remote view & Websence for logging/filtering. We would have needed a whole team to do the management for all 3000 staff

What he said!
I would be surprised if key loggging was not illegal in this way as it would be open to possible abuse (credit card numbers).

It sounds to me that the OP has a severe lack of trust in their employees, so why keep them? Sack 'em :). Or alternatively, make it very clear through educating the employees what is and is not allowed and either trust them with that and remind them periodically, or explain that internet use may be monitored and leave them with that. If they find out they are very closely being monitored I wouldn't be surprised if they found other employment soon, I know I would and would tell my employers exactly why I was leaving.

And yes, phones with 3G can be used anyway. And the occassional quick glance over someones shoulder now and again can be done

I had a couple of gals rack up an £800 bill with AAISP after streaming countless tennis matches. :)

Give untangle a try. You probably have a spare machine you could use for it. Whether or not the performance of the actual software is good enough doesn't matter. The reaction of the staff is what you need to gauge.
