Enabling Tri Fire!!

Yeah should be the same as enabling xfire so AI on standard, regarding PSU, below quote from guru3d regarding tri-fire Power requirements.

Radeon HD 5870 CrossfireX (3-way)
Here's where things get a little tricky, reserve 600 Watts for the GPUs on the +12 volt rails, another 250 Watts for the processor (we assume you are overclocking) and then add another 100W for the regulars.

Really, we say... go with a proper kilowatt PSU here, as next to a decent safety margin you also need a PSU with enough 6/8-pin power connectors for the graphics card.

Alright, we've covered most of the hardware. We'll now peek at the cards, the hardware and software suite and then fire off the benchmarks in which we'll demonstrate performance between a modern normal PC and the new high-end X58 motherboard with an overclocked Core i7 965 processor.

I would say an 850 watt PSU may be cutting it fine, more so with an overclocked i7/i5

Oh bugger that, not gonna spend another £150 + for a new psu :p
But the single 5970 would be fine ?
Do you know what the advanced does on the AI ?

Thanks a lot.

Yeah 5970 is the fasted GFX card on the planet so it's all good there ;)

A bit more research regarding CCC AI and maybe you should leave it on advanced, if you get any corruption go back to standard.

If Catalyst AI is enabled, you can also choose the aggressiveness of such optimizations, either Standard or Advanced on the slider. The Advanced setting ensures maximum performance, and usually results in no problems or any noticeable image quality reduction. If on the other hand you want to always ensure the highest possible image quality at all costs, disable Catalyst A.I. (tick the 'Disable Catalyst A.I.' box). I recommend leaving Catalyst A.I enabled unless you experience problems. ATI have made it clear that many application-specific optimizations for recent games such as Oblivion are dependent on Catalyst AI being enabled.

Crossfire users should set Catalyst A.I. to Advanced to force Alternate Frame Rendering (AFR) mode in all Direct3D games for optimal performance. Once again, Catalyst A.I. should only be disabled for troubleshooting purposes, such as if you notice image corruption in particular games.

Thanks for that mate ;)
But disabling A.I will turn the crossfire off correct ?
I would have thought there be a setting saying crossfire enabled/disabled :p

So my PSU will run the 5970 just fine.
If i did go nuts and went for the tri-fire, what PSU would you or someone recomend ?
I guess the 480 would need a good 1500w to run SLI ?

Cheers :)

Yeah no AI=no xfirex, you can aways use GPU-z to see if it's on or not and you also get the xfire logo in games when it is activated. For tri-fire PSU, I would say 1000 watt will do the job.

Cool, thanks for that :)
I'm liking the the look of the Cooler Master one.
So if you tried you run cards on a underpowerd psu, what would go wrong ?
How much watts are some guys running on the GTX 480 sli by the way ?

well im soon going to run a 5970 with 5850 in tri fire :D

will tell youy my results

When you doing that mate :D what PSU will you be running with them.

Thanks for you're help :)

Not enough juice then the system should just shut down if it's a good PSU, a bad/cheaply made PSU could damage other components.

SLI 480's would require an 850 watt supply min and a 1000 watt PSU to be on the safe side when used with a highly clocked CPU.

Im doing it as soon as my 5850 ships from a certen online store...

And when my EK water block arrives from germany, its a nickel 5850 block :D

end of this week i presume :D
all depends on how fast the postage from germany to UK is... hopefully i wont be charged VAT at customs on a 85 euro block...
