I was thinking of getting something like an Icy Box eSATA & USB 2.0 along with a hard drive for photo/music backups.

I also have an old PC which is running Windows 98se at my parents house. Would I still be able to transfer files from it using the older version of USB or do I need a PC which is eSATA & USB 2.0 compatible?

If you want to connect to a win98 machine remember you need to use FAT32 for the filesystem which will give slightly poorer performance when compared to NTFS.
