i'm trying to upload a video i've made to to youtube.

i've tried encoding with xvid and the even on the highest settings, it looks blocky and bad.

i've heard that mjpeg will give larger files but better quality, but i've tried to search for a few codecs and cannot find a good one. perhaps my google skills are bad, but i just need an mjpeg codec that works with virtualdub. is anyone here using a good one or have one that they can recommend?

finally, does youtube accept mjpeg files?

mjpeg is a really old codec. Are you sure you are using the right settings for xvid? You may have increased the quantizer value too high, lower values actually mean better quality. I wouldn't think that mjpeg would produce particulary good results nowadays, certainly not when file size is taken into account. You'd be better off trying x264, i think that virtualdub can work with that. However, if you want to give it a shot with mjpeg, Virtualdub may support mjpeg out of the box, if not ffdshow encoder does. I reckon youtube would support it, its a pretty simple codec.

hi, it turns out VLC was making my encoded videos look bad, i tried playing them in WMP and they look fine, so i went for x264 in the end, thanks! :)
