Encryption chip to stop pc piracy.

We'll see how long it lasts before somone figures out a workaround. Games will still have to be made for computers that don't have the chip. So its going to be years off anyway.

Nice of him to give us a heads up, if theres any truth to it the chip will probably be discovered inside a few hours.

I don't see it working myself ppl can just hack it at the bios level or somit or like consoles just fit a bypass chip maybe. At the end of the day if publishers (nowt to do with developers) want to stop piracy they have to start properly funding and give full time to develop with no rushes for holidays and make sure they are bug free as well as good game play before we actually stop pirating games.

The sole reason consoles sell better is not because of piracy its because its a easier to develop platform as there all the same hardware. Piracy still effects consoles a lot because of the chipping that goes on.

So this new innovation Atari have come up with will not do anything really except annoy people just like M$ do with the activation crap for the change of hardware stuff.

old news been proposed a few times before no one wanted it, no one would put it on their boards. It died then it'll die now.

Riiiight.
Fail to you Atari.

Oh and shut it Atari, you ruined Microprose and I'll never forgive you for that, you ruined more than pirates ever did.

Exactly, Put this chip on your board and watch your sales figures plummet!

Hardly an incentive, and as said above, it will be hacked/bypassed either before or immediatly upon release.

The only way to combat piracy is to make genuine ownership more economical and less hastle, current anti piracy measures do little other than annoy the people who actualy pay for the product, this chip looks like more of the same....lol.

exactly look at galactic Civ 2, it has no copy protection what soever however if you want the patches/updates you need a cd to get them from their servers (although this is undoubtedly hacked), and it's a very good game. Even without copy protection it suffered very little piracy.

Then look att he 15 day activation thing they wanted for spore and how many people immediately turned to "**** it I'll pirate it so i can play it when i don;t have the internet/for less hassle" after the announcement, till they wen;t back on it and removed the 15 day checks.

If this works as advertised I am all for it. Sounds to me like they have been listening to us when we complaing about things like Starforce. This is a non-intrusive protection system (if works as advertised).

If something really could stop game piracy on the PC and not have crappy 3rd party DVD drive destroying OS destablising software. Then I am 100% for it!

Hi,

Instant Fail TBH. There will always be motherboard manufacturers making a board without this chip becuase the market would be huge. People will just keep buying boards without the chip so games devs will have to make games without the code for the chip or lose a lot of sales. Cue viscious circle.

Cheers,
Hugest

Me too,

Dont see what all the fuss is about

the issue is its a non enforceable standard, therefore any firm that does use it will likely see reduced sales or being bypassable, there is no such thing as unhackable, merely the amount of time it takes to hack, and quite frankly id rather not have to log onto an encryption checker each time i boot a game

To be fair this is Nolan Bushneel speaking and he hasnt had anything to do with atari since he left in the late 70's.

surely this kind of thing has been proposed many times, and just after this type of thing is announced, it dissapears into that big block hole of failure...
