Hi, does anyone know the best (Freeware) encryption program that I can use to encrypt data for storage on dvdr and also online storage etc

I don't want MI5 standard or anything just something that is fool proof and more secure than ZIP and Rar passworded files etc.

Thanks

how secure is the new version of winrar? would this be good for encrypting mp3s for example and sending them over the net
Why do you want to encrypt mp3s? WinRAR compresses files, it doesn't encrypt them. Although you can password them if you wish.

masslac is correct, the best freeware encryption software is TrueCrypt, although at present it isn't fully Vista compatible.

no reason, just taking for example,

I've just downloaded the latest version of winrar and it says this.

ZIP 2.0 format supported by WinRAR uses a proprietary encryption algorithm. RAR archives are encrypted by the much stronger AES-128 standard. If you need to encrypt sensitive information, it is better to select the RAR archive format. For real security use passwords of at least 8 characters in length. Do not use words of any language as passwords, it is better to choose a random combination of characters and digits. Note that passwords are case sensitive. Remember that if you lose your password, you will be unable to retrieve the encrypted files, not even the WinRAR author is able to extract encrypted files.

truecrypt is too complicated for me to use

Truecrypt can use superencryption, way better than what governments use.

Or if you want it to be truly unbreakable use, one time pad encryption

ok guys i'll have a read of the truecrypt instructions, i've worked out how to create volumes and mount/dismount etc.

thanks
