Endless Space seems to have it all. A compelling story, which features an ancient super civilization, several factions to choose from, a big emphasis on discovery (powerful artifacts left from precursors), luxuries and strategic resources management, a tech-tree system, trade, diplomacy, state-of-the-art graphics, modular spaceship design, customized civilizations setup, an innovative and dynamic simultaneous turn-based gameplay, multiplayer, different victory conditions, an hero-character system with unique ability trees and specializations… Check here for all about the features and all other game info. There’s an interesting thread in Amplitude’s forums that talks a great deal about the game design features also.

The game offers a superb UI. Functional, appealing, accessible. And while transitions from UI screens are flawless, the game performance (particularly turns) still leaves a bit to be desired. After setting up a medium-sized map with 8 AI players, turns were taking a bit too long to process. You need to have a look at this one guys.

It’s naturally too soon to have a definitive take on things and I feel that I only just scratched the surface. But, if we add up the quality the game already shows with the amount of polishing and tweaking it will suffer at the hands of the player’s feedback, Endless Space can only become a great game.

Now, or when it’s finished, there’s no doubt in my mind that this game will be a must for the veteran 4X gamer. And depending on the final state of the game (although it sure is looking promising!) it may also be, perhaps, the perfect game to introduce new people to the genre. Well done Amplitude! You game has surely lived up to the expectations. Now, please continue your great work!

HEADS UP!!

Amplitude Studios is working hard and is close to release a new alpha version for Endless Space. Their expectations are to release the new alpha today on Steam. You can see the full list of changes, additions and fixes here.
Some changes/additions I retained:

  • Added a drag and drop function for the items of the construction queue
  • Fixed an issue where AI fleets can initiate a fight during the “End turn” phase
  • Added a warning message if you don’t have a research in queue on end turn
  • Added a warning message if your bank account become negative at the next turn
  • Exchanges can no longer be made in cold war or war
  • Added a colored symbol to most of the icons of the tech tree
  • Improved the 3D viewport in the Military and Ship Design screens
  • Added background elements in the Battle view (asteroids, wrecks)
  • Added a zoom level slider in the Galaxy View
  • More here.
Endless Space is currently in alpha but you can already pre-purchase on Steam and start playing now. You have a preview of the first alpha released on Steam on May 2, 2012 here. The game is expected to release on Summer 2012 with the boxed-version expected on Aug 24, 2012. The publisher, Iceberg Interactive, is also planning for French and German versions of the game.

Even with alpha's and Beta's I'll never pre-order a game again, wouldn't mind a quick sneek peak before purchasing lol

Amplitude Studios announced that they will go Beta for Endless Space next Monday (4th June 2012) at the end of the day on Steam. So, I believe they mean end of day in France’s (Amplitude’s HQ) time.
So, apparently, you have until this next Sunday to benefit from the 25% off on full price promotion during alpha pre-ordering.
The beta will include the following new features (on top of many bugs and other changes since the first alpha):

  • 8 playable factions: previous 5 plus the Amoeba, Sowers and the Pilgrims (art work above)
  • Multiplayer enabled! You’ll be able to play against 7 other players online
  • German and French languages
Amplitude also stated that in these past weeks their main effort has been spent on:

  • Achieving the first version of the multiplayer
  • Completing the last 3 playable factions (art, gameplay)
  • Improving the diplomatic system (better feedback, better attitude behavior)
  • Tweaking the game parameters and content to improve the gameplay flow and depth
  • Fixing many bugs
  • Including some of the community requested improvements (they didn’t say which at this point but they promised a long list of changes a few hours before the release – squeezing all you can, right guys?)

Amplitude is now aiming final game release “around July”. They didn’t want to advance a firm date (clever of them). They said that “the final date will depend on when we’ll be fully satisfied by the game”. Good. I remember that the publisher, Iceberg Interactive, announced a retail release date for 24 August 2012 by the way. So, you have some time :)
Then, they end the beta announcement with an intriguing teaser statement: “For us, the release is the just the beginning for Endless Space… definitely not the end!” ~Amplitude Studios
So, if you didn’t pre-order yet, and are planning to buy this game, I think this weekend would be a good timing for that. 25% off is still much more than a couple of beers :) Here is our hands-on preview for you to have a close look at it.

A beta version of the Windows edition of Endless Space is now available on Steam as a bonus to those who pre-purchase the 4X space strategy game. Pre-purchases come at a 10% discount, and the game's full release is expected in July. Here are a few features of the beta:
  • 8 playable factions: The previous 5 plus the new Amoeba, Sowers and Pilgrims factions
  • Multiplayer enabled! You’ll be able to play against 7 other players online
  • English and French language versions (German should be available later this week)

Nice strategy game generally, but highly imbalanced in favour of the AI and the combat mechanic is Shockingly Bad... Pretty much choose a card at random in each phase and see what happens. A shame as it seems to have great potential overall, it really let's it down. The diplomacy seems a bit pointless also.

Bit of a mental game, really. I bought it back in beta and have dipped into it every now and again but, shamefully, haven't played since the full release. It's unique in that you can build pretty much anything you like to whatever scale you like, i.e. you can have ridiculously huge ships if you have the resources and inclination. Fascinating little game really. It even has a built-in IRC client that the devs hang around in. :)

and ofcause
