energy bills

I pay £50 a month via DD, But i turn the heating off after may and its back on in sep. Yet i still pay the £50 a month and it just waits for the higher cost months in winter.

3Bed house
That's gas an electric btw

This thread is making me realise how disgusting utilities companies are and how we are being totally ripped off and taken for ride...

Our bill was apparently 400 (most of that electric we don't use that much gas aside cooking) for 3 months from EDF for 3 ppl in house, I thought to myself... oh really?

Also dude above saying water charging you 45 as its "standard charge" you get meter put in and it's 10 quid...?

Seriously?

How is this crapp allowed to occur...

water meters aren't cheaper for everyone
you can get rid after 12months though if it's not

I'm on the blue price promise with edf, I was paying £40 a month for my one bed flat (everything in this place is electric, even the heating) and I got so much in credit that they cut my payments down to £19 a month. I stayed in credit over the winter (lots of hiding under blankets :D ) and now it's warmer again, I've not had the heating on at all for weeks now.

My water is metered, I was paying £24 a month direct debit, again I got so far in credit compared with usage, I'm now down to £10.50 a month (they cut my direct debits and paid me back £60)

I am ridiculously sensible with both the above (everything gets turned off at the mains that can be, plug sockets etc) I only have a shower in my flat, and so far it would appear its working. I get cross when people come round and waste water. :D

switch to these asap, cheapest company in the uk

Don't go with Spark. If I were to post what I think of them I'd get a ban, but lets just say they're rubbish. We're with them in a student house currently, and are only with them because the con-agent of a landlord has it written in the contract that we must be with Spark and can't switch.

According to the link in the post above yours you're free to switch regardless so get rid!

I think I can count myself lucky going by some comments here. £188 for the quarter November to February - with EDF (2 people in a 2 bed semi)
Also, I saw Paul Lewis (presenter of a money program on radio 4) saying electricity is cheaper over night. Does anyone know the time it becomes cheaper?
I don't suppose it would make a massive difference to me, whilst I'm reasonably frugal with my usage I'll turn a light on if I need to.

1:30am BST (12:30am GMT) It's usually know as Economy7 and you need a meter that will switch over for the cheaper rate. The day rate is slightly more expensive but the night rate is about 1/3.

I recently discovered we are on E-7 so now I time the dishwasher to start after 1:30 with its delay start - every little helps :)

As far as bills go, ours is about £1100pa for duel fuel with EDF for a 3 bed terrace.

A little tip to anyone trying to reduce their electricity bill, don't use the plug in radiators if they are not necessary.

I'm doing up my house slowly (room by room), I ripped up lino that was on my pantry floor to find the floor very wet. I put a plug in radiator in there to dry the floor, on a low heat, while I was waiting for someone to put tiles down in there.

Purhaps a little naivety on my part but I've left the radiator on for about 3 months. I've been paying British Gas £156 a month for duel fuel, compared to the prices people on here pay I thought it was a high but I didn't know what was costing so much to run. I'll add I'm living here on my own, I leave for work at 7:30 and get back between 5-5:30 Mon-Fri. I calculated I was using 19 kwh per day. After turning the radiator off, I'm using 2.5 kwh per day.

As it's my first house, first time paying electricity, gas etc I suppose you learn about these type of things over time but if your using a plug in radiator and don't really need it, turn it off!

No wonder those things usually run at a few thousand kwh, it's like leaving your kettle or iron on all the time!

I'll never touch spark ever again.

I had them baked into the rental agreement in my last place with Romans Lettings (I question if this is actually legal). Suffice to say in a place with only electric heating I was gouged at every opportunity. I attempted to change out but they referred to the contract.. you get the idea. Biggest load of cow-merchants and .. well there's not enough vitriol I can spew at Romans or Spark.

Southwest seems ok, but even with monitoring the electricity/gas usage, we're seeing normal bills rise like others but nothing like spark.

We compared our quarters - we're using the same volume/KWh as the same period last year - the only change is the cost per volume/KWh.

We're moving from a 2 bed to a 4 bed and we're estimating some serious energy bills.
