Energy Prices (Strictly NO referrals!)

British Gas decided to refund me £250 on my gas as I was £300 in credit. ShockedPikachuFace.jpg, use f all gas in the summer, loads in the winter. I'll be giving it them back next quarter bill. This company boils my blood as well as hot water :p

It’s cheaper than it’s been recently, over 6p. Last year was around the same in Nov and cheaper in Dec. Can’t see when it was 3-4p at this time of year. Lowest I can see in my emails is 4.08p on 20th Dec 2023.

Ah looks like I'm misremembering slightly, my Nov and Dec 2023 bills were indeed around 5p average, but my Jan and Feb 2024 bills were 3.9p and 3.5p.

I always tell people it depends on your own usage as to which is the best tariff. If Octopus, download octopus compare for Android or octo-aid for iOS to get comparisons on your usage from different tariffs.

Also, them being this high is rare but expected this time of the year. Staying on tracker could be beneficial over a 12 month period. Don't just take a couple of days data when it's high as your deciding factor.
Thanks - I'll keep an eye out.

Currently in "conversation" with Octopus about what they are going to charge me for the last 4/5 months and of course the gesture of goodwill I should be receiving for the hassle.

IOG- Same area :p
Standing charge (per day) 48.788p 48.788p
Unit rate - day (per kWh) 26.716p 27.102p
Unit rate - night (per kWh) 7.000p 7.000p

Your estimated annual cost

Current prices
until 31st December 2024 £799.44

New prices
from 1st January 2025 £803.05
(£3.61 annual increase)

My export for this year was £859.13

Edit: 'Our cheapest fixed tariff is Octopus 12M Fixed December 2024 v1, which we estimate would cost you £1,682.01 per year.'

Not related to the price rise, but I just put in a switch request from Octopus to Tomato.

Going from the figures on the Bright app, it looks like the switch could save £20-£30/month

Elec less than 13p on tracker tomorrow, time for any last minute xmas washing.
Will use the drier until it is in flames (shouldn't joke about that, last model we had was the burst into flames edition, anyway, it was still miles better than this condenser one)

We getting there again on Agile, pushing away more of that horrible expensive gas, with more turbines coming back online, only two to go. Late November more than half of them were offline.

Tomato has my interest, it is offering tariffs similar to Octopus but without the requirement of using EV or heat pumps.

I think any strategy in the UK that's serious about fixing energy prices needs to obsolete gas power stations. Alongside proper gas storage, sourcing as well.

Yes mid December is when the first of the Nuclear turbines came back online.

It seems wind is not enough to drag it down if too much Nuclear is offline.

Might change when the interconnects between Scotland and England are in allowing better transfer from Scottish wind farms to the South and lower the curtailment costs.
How long away is that? The current government at least have said they going to drop the first come first served system and prioritise things that have bigger benefits for grid work.

From what I can tell; it's at the early stages, at least in England, according to here - https://www.nationalgrid.com/electr...frastructure-projects/cross-border-connection

Apparently Scottish Power is further ahead on the Scottish side due to different planning regs etc than England... But then, it's those same regs that are making England lag way behind in renewables compared to other parts of the UK. Perhaps those regs need addressed as well
