Energy Shift is what E.on call it but other suppliers may have their own catchy name for it. It's where the energy supplier pays you to reduce your energy consumption at a given time.

My first target is to achieve 0.4kWh between 17:00 and 18:00 tomorrow, where normally our usage is 0.9kWh at that same time period.

Not heard of it. We’re with octopus, will have a look to see.
Do you need a smart meter?
In your case is 0.5kWh easily achievable? What sort of changes do you think you’ll have to make?

Have an hour tonight with Octopus. Wonder what we can save tbh. Heating hasn't been coming on much at all, maybe a little in the morning. I guess cooking and devices.

Figured we would do our part.

Looks like a few other companies are promoting it and others here are participating, good to see.

I'm sure a reduction of 0.5kWh is achievable as long as all the high draw appliances and stuff aren't being used, the old plasma TV consumes around 400W on it's own but that's not normally on until after teatime. It'll be dark by then but thankfully most of the lights are LED. I'm making a game of it with my lad, using the IHD to switch stuff off to see how the consumption drops and if we meet the target he can pocket the "winnings".

According to the email for this pilot event "you could earn around £1.99 by participating" so it's not going to make anybody richer, well apart from my son!

Octopus: You'll earn 1800 OctoPoints – that's £2.25 worth – for every unit of electricity you cut down between 5:00 PM and 6:00 PM on 15th November.

But my historic usage is <0.4kw... :(

I like this sort of gameification, it tends to appeal to people a lot. How does it work, do you get the period announced far ahead of time, and does it change?

Its around 24 hours in advance. I guess when the grid predict an issue the following day.
Octopus you need to sign up to receive the notifications and then sign up for that specific session before it starts.

Its too early to know how its going to play out longer term, so far the only thing that has happened is a previous Octopus trial.

we did a few of the test sessions earlier in the year with octopus, for us it mostly meant not using our electric oven for the evening meal and that made it pretty easy to achieve. Luckily we've got a gas hob which runs of tank gas as we live out in the sticks so our gas usage is invisible to them.

Gas usage isnt part of the trial

Well I used 0.12kWh in the hour. My normal usage varies so will be interesting to see how much my payment is. We powered everything down and went shopping...

Normally use 20kWh a day, before charging EV. Gas heating.

You forgot to turn the fridge/freezer off for that hour...would have been 0.02kWh then. :p

Octopus can't read our v1 smart meter so our efforts have in part been wasted. Instead they say that "we assume you got involved and saved power, so we're crediting you the average earned by customers in this session".
