system,

akasa eclipse 62.
enermax infiniti 650w.
gigabyte ga-p35c-ds3r rev1.
e6600,scythe ninja,as5.
geil 4x1gb pc6400 4.4.4.12.
bfg oc 640meg 8800gts.

the above has been running well for about a year but the other day i installed a new dvd writer (nec 20x sata) which i did very carefully as usual with my pc. turned on the mains power then the psu on switch then the power button on the case and all i'm getting is 2 beeps then a pause with a flashing red light on the rear of the psu, no post at all.

i removed the new dvd and replaced with my older one, same red light and beeping. removed everything except essiantials and it's the same. i've just stripped it fully bare and rebuilt carefully and it's still red and beeping.

i have no spares either (this pc is an old one nothing compatible) to test which is faulty so which part should i buy first? psu?

Your instructions and box for that PSU clearly state what each Fault Alarm means (beeps and colour of LED).

ahh woops sorry, it's not blinking just solid red with 2 beep interval, no fans are spinning up either. i also tried the little reset button next to the red light but no change. how could i have killed my pc just by changing a dvd writer?

Doubt it, but if EIDE and using a Molex you could have shorted something and tripped the PSU, Pull power from PSU, press PC Power button to get the charge out of it (you will see fans spin for 1/2 second).

I would then reset the PSU using the button and leave it a good 5-10mins.

no both the older and newer drives are sata, i gave the psu a rest overnight last night before doing a rebuild today.

Well even if powered on, you cant short out Sata Power (connections are staggered to allow Hotplugging ) only a Molex shorts.

Pull your CMOS Battery and reset CMOS, then try again, Bios may not like change of hardware, I get sometimes messing with different HDD's.

I have the 720Watt version of your PSU

hmmm i remember pulling out the battery on the cmos yesterday but don't think i resetted it doh, thanks something new to try :)

no change after removing battery for 2mins then replaced and shorted the jumper for 10+secs. looking at the manual all you need to do is either short or removing the battery to clear.
pulled the power lead and no fan spin up at all.

i've ordered an Antec Power Supply Tester, only a tenner and at least that'll narrow the search for the fault hopefully.

the power supply tester will tell you exactualy what the powersupply is telling you

Its not working

The psu had tripped to save the rest of your equiptment.

try another psu if you have one spare.

oh and clearing the cmos will do nothing as the PSU comes before the motherboard

Do you actually have this PSU like we do ?.

Swapping HDD's about or even messing about in case say removing GPU or Memory and refitting I have on occasion got no boot, and Red Light and Alarm.

Normally a press of the PSU's reset button resets it but on odd occassion Ive had to reset Mobo Bios.

The PSU is very Tech and very Sensitive, it needs to see a certain amount of current draw on start up or it will set of the Alarm, (this could be lower or higher).

err, do you use the reset button on the psu while it's on and red and beeping or switch off and then use the reset button? or reset button when it's on amber standby?

yeah just tried it and all it did was turn the audio alarm off then i powered off and tried again and still getting the red light and two beep, oh well worth a try.

i'll wait for the psu tester now but i'm guessing all that may happen is it'll do the same thing with that lol.

just tested the psu in the tester, amber lights on the rails and a big red fault light on the power light. the psu is still doing it's safety beepbeep red light thing too so atleast it did'nt explode, shame it did'nt even last a year though boooo! rma time i think.

i plugged in a corsair hx 520w (nice next day delivery from ocuk :) )and everythings running perfectly so it was the psu. arranged an rma for the enermax beeper so that'll be going back soon then i'll have a spare psu.

just received my rma new infiniti 650w, not a bad turn-around i guess 9-10 days from my rma request email. hmm which to keep as a spare my new corsair hx520 or my new infiniti 650w hehe
