Yeah, the price which things sell on the high street do not represent their value.
Ie, you couldnt sell the ring you just bought for £5k, for £12k, you'd sell it for the price it was genuinely worth. Which is probably £5k!
Nice buy, and i'd totally do the same and if i were looking to propose i would be asking you for a linkup. But it isnt a £12k ring...
The mark up on poor quality stones is huge.
Size DOES NOT MATTER with diamonds, quality does.
You cant tell from photos but that ring with superb stones might well retail for 12k, but with poor stones could be knocked up and sold for 2/3k.
You would need to know the details of the stones to make a judgement.
As for what to spend, forget that 3 months salary ****, spend what you can afford, dont start financing/credit carding a ring.
And concentrate on one stone, dont bother with stone set shoulders, spend what you are spending on one stone.

My wife hasn't got an engangement ring, 2 wedding rings and a quick trip to the goverment office to get married.
That said I had to say my vows in Bahasa Indonesian and she didnt tell me till afterwards that if I'd got them wrong we would have had to wait a month to try again. The stress was bad enough anyway without having known that.
Even worse I had to pass a muslim medical before hand so before we get married i had some dude checking out my wang and declaring "Bagus!" which means excellent in bahasa which ment i spent the next 5 mins cracking up big time. So i was legally converted to being a muslim while trying not to laugh my ass off and reading the vows off a crib sheet.
All that said I love my wife very much and having to jump through some Indonesian hops to marry her is nothing compared to the ones the UK are making me do, never mind the visa, the Cetificate on No Impedance cost me around £100 in total, once you get the cert from your registiars office in the UK, get it legalised by the FCO, and then pay the embassy in jakarta to provide the "indonesian equivalent" letter. The Visa is going to cost £800, plus the english exams she now has to take to prove she can speak english. All of which also takes even more time and money.
I have promised her an engangment ring once all the visa stuff is done and dusted and shes in the UK. It's my plan to give it to her at the airport once she arrives but after ive finished helping UK.gov out with the defecit it could well be an Argos special but as she said (and shes a money grabbing slant eye as my dad so kindly put it when I told him we were getting married) "I dont need an expensive ring to prove you love me cause you do it every day"...... Now that does make me feel good.

For ****s sake dont buy anything from Argos, the nearest Elizabeth Duke has come to Bond street is reading about it, that jewelry is ABSOLUTELY ****.

Just buy a tap washer, that way, when she's in the kitchen (where she should be, natch) she can put it somewhere safe, and useful.....like that tap while washing the dishes. Like the nutter should be.

It was a comment on the price level not what i intend to actually buy. If I had a wife who wanted soveriegen rings from the Argos Chav collection I could have found one a lot closer to home.

signature ideal cut, Colour E, Clarity SI1, That is for £472 ex vat. Sound reasonable?
Going to be spending about £1k all in for the ring. I've seen rings with diamonds of lesser grade in high st for £3k+, Am I missing something?

The English side of Blue Nile is a pall of mine, they are as good as you get.
Ideal cut means it will sparkle as well as can be hoped, ie not too shallow not too deep.
Colour E is ok.
S1 means there are small inclusions (cracks) in the stone probably only visible under 10x magnification.
