Engine Bay Cleaning

Steam cleaner, they have one where my father works and they're always cleaning engines with it, does a terrific job, no need to protect the electrics 1st.

I think most diesel cars have covers to hide the ugly-ness, Although I think mine is more tidier then the Focus at the top.

Diesel engines don't look much different to their petrol counterparts; the plastic covers are there for a reason - acoustic shielding. You will find there are large bolt-on trays underneath the engine too, making oil changes a right PITA! These are all there to bring the drive-by noise levels down.

i professionally detailed my engine bay yesterday with an old can of gunk to soak into the greasy bits and then used my dad's hot water karcher to do the rest.

... it looks as good as you could expect a 170k mile old car to do so. i washed the bad mofo too, ill put some pics up later

Surely the under-tray has an aerodynamic advantage, as well as slight protection of the sump.

Edit: And as for plastic engine covers, I prefer the look of cast ally rocker covers, chromed inlet tracts looks nice too.

Same here, pressure washer and Gunk and I have NEVER had any problems

i took some pics earlier, it is stupidly clean, i can see the VW part numbers.. never knew they were there lol (life is too short for cleaning..)

Truck wash 20 20 is what i & many in the trade use. With Truck wash it's that good you don't need to use a pressure washer & can use just a hose. This is much better for petrol engines/electrics etc. If it's a Derv then no bother use what you like & go mad but with Petrol i wouldn't use Pressure.
With truck wash all you do is spray it on, Agitate it with a dustpan brush leave it a few minutes then rinse it off (rinse Heavily). It completely mints an engine bay out in ten minutes with no scrubbing or hard graft.
