Steam cleaner, they have one where my father works and they're always cleaning engines with it, does a terrific job, no need to protect the electrics 1st.
I think most diesel cars have covers to hide the ugly-ness, Although I think mine is more tidier then the Focus at the top.
Diesel engines don't look much different to their petrol counterparts; the plastic covers are there for a reason - acoustic shielding. You will find there are large bolt-on trays underneath the engine too, making oil changes a right PITA! These are all there to bring the drive-by noise levels down.
i professionally detailed my engine bay yesterday with an old can of gunk to soak into the greasy bits and then used my dad's hot water karcher to do the rest.

Surely the under-tray has an aerodynamic advantage, as well as slight protection of the sump.
