Engine Mounts & manifold

Just been in to kwik-fit in an attempt to find the problem of my exhaust blowing.

they said that the manifold was loose or something and that my engine mounts have gone (which probably caused the manifold to go)

does this sound likely?

Where can I get engine mounts/manifold done and what sort of price should i expect to pay? i feel i'm about to be stung with labour charges :(

Maybe an engine mount or two. 1 - 2 hours labour depending where and what car you have + cost of mounts.

does your engine rock a lot at idle? if no then Id be surpised if the mounts are gone.

Tho I do hate kwik fit with a passion after they told me I would need motors drilled out and replaced entirely and welded back in, with huge labour charges.

this was when I asked to borrow a spanner to tighten a windscreen wiper arm on a polo. I told them where to shove it and borrowed a spanner when I got to work with poor visibility. surprise, surprise, it fixed it.

if kwik fit told me today the sky was blue, I'd have to check it for myself before believing them.

yeh,

this is why i want a second opinion :p

the engine does have a fair amount of play in it.

my brother is an RAF engineer and he told me a while ago that the mounts were gone :p

in the process of getting hold of a mate who can take a look at it for me as he is quite knowlegable in the area of engines ;)

Try somewhere like Euro Car Parts for the mounts if they are knackered, if you have a few sockets/spanners fitting them yourself should be easy enough.
Just use a jack to take the weight of the engine and change the mounts one at a time.

Make sure the engine is balanced well though. I managed to dump an engine out the bottom of the engine bay like this, it made a large oily mess. Luckily the car was being broken anyway so we chucked it in the boot:D. But yes, it should be prefectly possible to DIY it, as long as you actually think about what you're doing.

Everytime ive done engine mounts and removed one the other mounts have usually been enough to hold then engine in place, just used a jack for more support and to position the engine into place.

Yeah, I think it depends a bit on the mounts. Some are useless if you load them in tension rather than compression, eg lifting the engine. So if the trolley jack isn't in the middle it acts as a pivot and just snaps the other mount.

How come they didn't notice that your tracking is out too?

Engine mounts do go but I've never heard of it breaking the exhaust. I expect the mounts may well have perished but the exhaust usually rots from the inside out.

£30.00 for a rear engine mount for my escort = parts & labour.

I suspect it might have had something to do with it shearing the gearbox/leaver linkage remote control rod about 6 months ago...

Your tracking is always out when you go into Kwikfit whether it is or isn't

I'd probably find a small local garage actually, one with an old bloke who smokes rollups. Just go in to a couple and get a couple of written quotes to change the engine mounts and the manifold. If you get a bad vibe while in any of them then walk away basically.
