Some people say that 3 cylinder engine sounds like half of a 6 cylinder engine and a 5 cylinder sounds like half of a 10 cylinder engine etc.

Why do 4 pots not sound like half a V8?

I've not heard this either

Even 4 pots can sound ok, but nice sounding 4 pots seem to be the exception rather than the rule

V6's sound good
V8's sound even better
And V10's/V12's well.....

Lopez, I've always wondered. Why do you have a picture of masjid al-nabwai in your signature? I'm sure I've asked you this before.

I've heard the l3 half a V6 thing, youtube Aygo/107/C1 Nurburgring and you can kind of convince yourself of the V6 thing!

a lot of the characteristics of an engine note are from the exhaust manifold, for example a Subaru Impreza sounds very very different as 2 of the exhaust pipes from the engine are a lot shorter than the other 2 giving a very distinctive burble (some say that sounds like half a V8...)

Unequal headers.

ITB's on a b18 sound like a sputtering v8...at times.

The Mrs silly little 107 does sound reasonably entertaining actually, but its nothing remotely close to an i6 or v6/8. Most of it is down to the exhaust as it has a little rasp higher up the rev range. Other than that it just sounds a little unbalanced....which I quite like. Its almost ( muted) boxer like

Definitely true that 3's sound a lot like 6's and 5's uncannily like a 10. 99% of 4 pots do sound like ass though and nothing like an 8.
