i got this car for free being a non starter, So i tried pulling it in gear and it would not start. Got the car in the garden connecteed up a fully charged battery and started pulling things of to see if it makes any diffrence. I took the top of the carb of(bit that runs to the air filter and the head???) and turned it over and it started!!! But it is spitting so much fuel out of the carb and if you give it a little rev it back fires though the carb and loads of smoke comes out of the carb! Just fuel going every where big puffs.

Is it somthing simple?

The car is a Fiat brava 1.4sx

Please help!

I'm sure it won't be carburettor, it might look like one but it's far more likely to be a throttle body with a single injector.

Symptoms could be caused by numerous problems, but I'd first check the cam timing. If the belt has slipped a tooth or two you could see this kind of problem.

A blocked exhaust/cat will also cause spitting back, as could an inlet valve not sealing properly.

Finaly an overly weak mixture will also cause spitting back, this could be caused by blocked injector, and air leak or a faulty sensor.

Are there any engine fault lights illuminated on the dash?

no nothing comes up at all. There is no air filter i removed it just bare carb. It puffs petrol then back fires though the carb and dies. then loads of smoke comes though the carb.

How can you tell if the timing belt has sliped? is that the cam belt?

Would the spark plugs make this happen?

I put my hand over the exhaust i could feel the air coming though.

just sounds like it is fireing so slow. then just goes bang

it has been sitting for 3years only done 38k

if its been standing for that long , best guess is that some of the inlet and or exhaust valve stems have rusted causing them to stick open hence the back firing through the inlet tract

on a open valve the stem is exposed therfore they can rust
