Engine Rebuild & Painting

Spare cam cover has arrived, do you think that red wrinkle finish would suit it?[/QUOTE]

Can you not get someone to PS it red?

It may give you a better idea of the basic look.

I think I'd probably not do it red in a blue car, because I think it would look a little odd, bt that's just me. Without seeing it it's hard to imagine.

Since we're posting F7P/Rs, I did mine with a blue block (hammerite) and black cam cover and left the gearbox silver:

Now that looks damn smart. Well done on a top job.

I used primer when I did it but only because the alloy was all tarnished. A coat of white high build primer helps even it out and brightens the red.

Are you being serious?

yes he is, its a well known performance increase option for older race engines, the ultimate is to polish and deburr the inside of the block.

Keeps the engine oil running cleaner, allows for faster flow back to the sump and stops tar build up inside the block.

I done mine with the same black paint, didnt turn out great though, think it got too cold overnight here at work.

When I did mine I did loads of layers, each really thinly and about 10 minutes between each, it gave a really deep crinkle to it.

The paint says it should only be used at temperatures over 25 degrees which is really quite hot! I blew up our existing garage heater when I turned it on so I went out and got 2x 2,000watt fan heaters which I used to blow on it and keep it pretty hot. I also followed the instructions to the letter, one light coat, another light coat 10 mins later then a final thick coat 4 hours after that. Also used a hairdryer as Lopez suggested for the final coat but to be honest with the fans on it anyway I don't think it made much difference.
