Engine sludge

regarding the atf trick, i have done that on my old golf (95, 235k miles) years back to quieten down a couple hydraulic lifters.

it ended up quietening them all down. mine are quieter than equivalent engines on half the miles

It's an option but I also heard that it lifts a lot of the sludge (I know that's the intention) but mainly in big lumps and ends up clogging the engine up even more as it can't be drained out, and cause leaks etc.

Although people have different opinions and success rates :p

It is the same for most BMW's. The 325i has an M54 six cylinder engine. This is the same engine (though smaller) that I have in my 530i which in the hands of its original owner regularly went almost 20k miles between services. In my hands due to my much lower mileage I tend to go about 12-14k between services.

The car tells you how many miles until the next service when you turn the engine on.

Just out of interest (as you know, I have a 523i) - is it the same for this? I service is regularly anyway but just curious :) I usually replace the oil every 3k miles or so.. is this too premature?

Should be - you see those green lights that come on when you start the car? They gradually dissapear. Once they all go out its service time.

3k per oil change sounds like a waste of money to me.

I know lots of classic car type owners change the oil all the time. In your typical car though, 3k seems really wasteful.

Then again, don't do what my mum did with her 318i and leave it for 10 years without a service. One engine rebuild and many lols later.... :p

Thanks mate - at what interval do you change your oil in yours?

Oh and a small update incase anyone has been reading my previous thread a while back - the bimmer is in the bodyshop now having its full cosmos black respray. Pictures soon on my other thread :) :)

was zero sludge in mine, its the varnish that builds up over time that i was aiming for

i dont think sludge is a good word for what burnt oil produces. it is extremely hard, ie lots of scrubbing with a wire brush to remove it from a sump

The car was originally in cosmos black, and it's only having an external spray. I couldn't afford a full body spray! I would have loved an aspensilver or some kind of grey e39.. or electric blue! :D
