Engine temp question

Somewhere in the middle.
We recently got a new (old) car and I've noticed that the engine temp never reaches 90c. On every car I've owned the needle would be vertical and sat at 90. This one gets to 80 and stays there regardless of how long we drive.

The engine also has auto stop start function, yet its not once reached the criteria for it to kick in. This is making me think maybe it's temp related.

Should all dials get to vertical /90 c or is it not an issue? Thanks.

Car is a 2016 hyundai tucson 1.7 diesel.

From a quick Google lots of people commenting the temperature sits on 80 once warmed up - nothing to say if it is an indication of a problem or not. Most vehicles are going to have a different normal operating temperature with 80-90 more common.

Personally never thought much of stop-start - there are loads of variables which affect its operation - but with more than one vehicle it rarely kicks in on my journey to work at rush hour when I'm queued a lot, decides to kick in at the slightest chance when I'm heading home in the early hours of the morning on deserted roads........ annoys me there is no simple way to just permanently disable it.

Thanks for the quick search and input.

I agree with regards to stop start and normally wouldn't care for it but since we've only had car from garage a few weeks I'd like it to kick in even once to put my mind at rest :D.

I read that maybe battery voltage can impact stop start too so I might plug the battery into a noco charger for a bit to rule that out.

Depends on car, on mine it is rarely in the middle and is often running cold as the fans are spinning up for the DPF, on a warm day after a clean it will go to mid point, but a couple of hundred miles the process starts again and the fans come on to keep its temps down. Can't remember the tuscon unfortunately.

Stop start has a lot of criteria to work, good battery level, low accessory power drain and low differential between inside and outside temp any of those off it won't work.

When I last had a Tuscon you may have had to enable it with a button on centre console, but I can't remember now if that was the auto e-brake.

It’s perfectly normal on those, they all do it. It plays with my ocd though as the gauge never sits in the middle.
