'Engineered' wood flooring?

Anyone got this? How does it hold up to everyday wear and abuse?

Yep, with a 6mm wood layer. It holds up better than solid wood as it doesn't share the same expansion / contraction issues. From what I've heard as well, you can't sand tongue and groove solid wood boards down any further than 6mm anyway as you'll be exposing the joint.

Long story short, engineered > solid wood.

I'm going to quote myself here [from another thread] as there are two distinc types of engineered wood flooring...

this is from another thread so slightly out of context...
Engineered wood:
There are two distinct camps here; lacquered and oiled. The lacquered versions look superb but if they do get damaged it's not just case of rubbing them down and doing a spot repair - the whole plank has to be done and you will be very hard pushed to match the other planks. they were without doubt the best looking floors but I did't want to have to get in a flap everytime a chair moved etc. These will be the types of floors you were warned away from; they probably didn't bother to tell you there was another type...

oiled on the other hand seemed a lot more appropriate; and cheaper too. there were certain finished that were nicer than their lacquered cousins too. I very nearly bought this!
The upkeep /cleaning is slightly more involved than lacquered or laminate, but you can sand them down every few years and re-finish them (messy!) you can only do this a few times depending on the thickness of the top layer.

The main brand I looked at was V4, but there are swarms of generic engineered floors out there too. V4 are expensive (see advice below about buying laminate though as I eventually got decent prices on V4 - but didn't buy it)

watch out for 'uv-oiled' products by the way; they're generally more akin to lacquered planks. the V4 site has very good information about all of this.
