Engineers! Get in here!

You guys who are getting all worked up about the engineer title surely have more things to worry about than a title?

Sounds pretty petty to me... :p

I'm not sure if you're trying to bait people now or not........

I literally can't understand the fuss! :p - Would it be better if we just offered the "Doctor" title to all proper engineers? Would that make them happy? :p Dear lord think of the engineers! :p

No but historically, why change the plumbers, gas fitters, mechanics titles to engineer?

They did it to gain status (and money) as everone is a plumber, in europe engineer is a protected title, as per doctor, but the UK it isn't, like I said previously it only ever bothers those who are on low salary/young engineers who are fresh out of uni. For the most part, all engineers agree that the title shouldn't be used for the likes of a tree cutter or mechanic but don't care.

And here we go.

Exactly what I thought before I even entered the thread

I suppose I'm neither but it still does grate me; its like calling people in school teachers who are not (like TA's, SA's, LM's etc...) and they try and muscle in.... just stooopid wanabes (caveat - some not all!)

All the proper engineers will be chartered anyway and that's protected.

We've been through this ad nauseam as a quick search will prove.

There are three triggers that define GD for me:

1. Immigration / Racism / Muslims

2. Religion

3. HE IS NOT AN ENGINEER GOD HE WORKS FOR SKY!

Any post or thread which involves any or, God forbid, all three of those will result in exactly the same responses to the thread posted only weeks (sometimes days) ago.

It's touchingly sweet in an annoying way.

Unless they do a doctorate then no. Technically there are two forms of doctor. There is the job title and the qualification. A lot of people in medicine are referred to as doctor but do not have an MD or a PhD so they are doctors by job title only. In engineering you become doctor through qualification and that is PhD or EngD. You get the title change to Dr. (and awesome pay!)

Chartered Engineer is a protected title in the UK. You need to be fully qualified professional engineer which means engineering degrees (currently to Masters level) and at least 4 years relevant experience.

I'm getting horribly recursive deja vu and will not - cannot - post any further in this thread. Good luck to those who stay and by the way you can compare your amazing insights to all of the other previously posted responses (which are identical to yours) by using the search function and the tag 'engineer'.

This is why we can't have nice things but have fun!

ill just leave this here...

Definition of engineer
noun
1a person who designs, builds, or maintains engines, machines, or structures.
a person qualified in a branch of engineering, especially as a professional:
an aeronautical engineer
2a person who controls an engine, especially on an aircraft or ship.
North American a train driver.
3a skilful contriver or originator of something:
the prime engineer of the approach
kinda makes the title engineer cover a wide and varied area, a bit like the profession.
or we could all not wrap our fragile ego's around a first world problem as somebody who didn't spend 4 years getting ****ed has the same job title as me

But in this case it really does matter. It's common in industry for technicians to get paid overtime but engineers not to.

This.

At our site, there is a salary threshold. Below it, you earn OT. Above it, you don't.

And what about Engineers that are entitled to use "Doctor" anyway? I would like something that distintinguishes me from my colleauges who did not do a doctorate. If you make them all Dr Engineer, what do I use? Dr Dr Engineer?

Orbital ion cannons charging, although they may have to wait until after my CEng interview next week.

Anything that takes 3 or 4 years of University level mathematics deserves some distinction IMO.

Hmm, i spent 4 years at uni getting an engineering (mechanical) degree, but i'm not chartered and don't work as an engineer, but rather as a technician. I'm self employed, and whilst getting an insurance quote the other day, the woman on the phone was trying to find the right job description to put down and said that it was going to be electrical engineer. I told her that i'm not actually an engineer, but if that's what she needs to put...

To be honest i actively refrain from calling myself an engineer, though in reality i probably have more "right" to do so than most "engineers" :p

Everyone seems to love an engineering debate here.

Boring!

Haha go tell one of your engineering officers that instead of techies you want to be called an aircraft maintance engineer and see how that goes down............

they tried to get us to allow a "normal commute" at each end of day but we refused it

A slight detour on a sunny day via the Scottish Highlands and the Isle of Sky ;)

engineers don't get paid overtime, they have a salaried position.........

WROOOONNNGGGGG!

I know Engineers who get overtime, simples.

I don't get overtime, just an offshore uplift, hence minimal amount of staying behind 'helping out the business' unless the **** really has hit the fan.

KaHn is just contract scum, but we love him, especially when saying things like ^that^ :D

I get paid to commute if it's a commute to a non-standard site. Apart from that, no.

BEng Electrical Engineer here.

Electrical engineer ( MEng) here. For 'proper' overtime eg customer driven on site work or faults we get paid from leaving the house until returning to the house, and if the whole thing is out with normal working hours it is a minimum 4 hour call out.
For jobs that just run a bit late or need to start a bit early we get paid nowt.
