Football in a nutshell. Has football got much more technical and tactical and "better" in the last 20 years? Yes. Teams now would likely batter the best teams from 20 years ago despite not necessarily having a better roster of players.

Is it more entertaining with the massive focus on tactics and whole team movement/cohesion? Probably not.

Not the only angle to it though - there was a lot less playing the man and other cynical tactics, etc. and a lot more on the ball play - something which is increasingly missing from today's football and makes a huge difference to the enjoyment as a spectator - a friend of mine was recently rewatching an old Manchester United game from around 2000 or so, so I watched bits of it, and it was completely different and far more enjoyable to watch than most football in recent years.
