Yet another poor performance from Cook. I'm sorry but he's just too consistent to be an opener for the team now. England need a reliable top order, not this wishy-washy nonsense.
Damn slow day today, this is boring as hell. Nothing going on until Anderson finally gets a wicket, and then Cook brings on the spinner for the next over, slowing down the momentum and relieving the pressure. I don't think he knows what he's doing anymore
Hopefully it'll happen soon. His batting performances surely make his position as captain untenable especially with him being an opener. I'm not sure who should be captain but he should be given the opportunity to show he can still perform but without the label.
It's tough with Cook, his form is completely in the toilet but no idea who could step in, plus he's been handed a pretty crap hand losing your first choice No. 3 and No. 4 at the same time in Trott and Pietersen which would put any opener under a lot of pressure.
I think Ian Bell is VC for Tests and Eoin Morgan for ODI/20-20 but I don't see either of them in the Test captaincy position long-term. Might just have to be a case of sticking with what we have and hoping it comes good.
I really feel Cook does himself no favours as captain - no-one is asking him to become a different person overnight, but it's basic things like not repeating the same mistakes and varying the plan of attack when it's clearly not working. I feel like he doesn't give the team much confidence as a result and we bat far too negatively in situations like the fourth innings. A team that believed they could win that game would have batted far more positively and we would have potentially avoided a situation where the Sri Lankans had so many runs to play with they could sit on top of our batsmen all day.
I actually wanted England to lose the second test. Should have won the first test really as there was a chance to declare earlier in the second innings and have a go at SL during the closing hours of the day. They didn't do this and played not to lose, rather than to win. For this reason, especially after Cook and Moores banged on about a new era, I think they (Cook and Moores) deserved to get nothing. Harsh as it may be, but you can't say one thing and do another. Warne said it well enough, sometimes, to win, you need to risk losing - it wasn't even much of a risk tbh.
