I'm of the opinion something can be poor in quality and enjoyable.

I'm of the opinion something can be good in quality and not enjoyable.

This is true of many aspects of life.

What do you guys think?

Do you think it's possible to enjoy something that is bad, or vise vera?
Do you think it's impossible, do you feel that you're enjoyment of something effects what you think of it? So for example, if you don't like it, it can't be good?

I agree with you.
But wasn't the discussion at hand.

Do the majority rate films based on enjoyment, or a more analytical process.
Would you rate a film you reall enjoyed as a 3/10 because it's known to be a bad film. Or would you rate it say 7/10 because you throughly enjoyed it?

All though I so sense your just trolling.

:)

That is this discussion.

.

It really wasn't and I clarified it on at least one occasion.

It was how people rate films, nothing general about it.
Back to the 3/10 or 7/10 scenario.

And again saying you enjoyed it despite bring poor wasn't the discussion either. It was whether people rated it on the poorness or the enjoyment.

It's like Castiel and Tummy all over again.

Again, selective quoting and ignoring my answer to your question. See my reply above.

If the film was a bad film, I'd say it was a bad film. If I enjoyed it though I'd say I enjoyed it.

Same applies to food, I can go to a restaurant, appreciate that the food is good for me and well cooked, I just might not enjoy it.

So what you are talking about... is opinions.

Of course things can be of good quality but not enjoyable and paradoxically pretty terrible in terms of quality but highly enjoyable. The primary factors governing what you feel will be context and expectations, without knowing the context here it's impossible to give anything more than a very general opinion though.

I can happily acknowledge that something is well made and deserves the critical acclaim yet not find it enjoyable myself, I see no inconsistency there - it's just having a personal opinion.

I suppose it's a bit of a guilty pleasure then no?

If you believe that you should feel guilty or embarrassed for liking something then yes, I suppose it is.

To use one of my usual examples I thoroughly enjoy The Replacements despite it starring Keanu Reeves, despite it being cheesier than a fromagerie, despite it not being terribly well acted and yet there's something about it that I find myself smiling at each and every time I watch it. I also like 'good' films that are critically acclaimed but in the hypothetical where I could only watch one film for the rest of my life I'd have to think long and hard between The Replacements, Casablanca and 12 Angry Men (I'd feel cheated only having that few to pick from but y'know...) - one is not comparable in quality to the others but in enjoyment terms it's right up there for reasons I couldn't even begin to explain. I can't say I feel particularly guilty or embarrassed about it, taste is by definition a very personal thing.

If Mark Kermode says that something is brilliant then it must be so because he is an 'expert' but it doesn't mean I will enjoy it even though I should because he is an 'expert'.
If Mark Kermode on the other hand says something is bad because he is an 'expert' then it doesn't mean I shouldn't enjoy it because it might be the best film I've ever seen because my brain told me to like it but really I shouldn't like it because Mark Kermode says.

This is very true!

I enjoyed The Replacements too if that's any conciliation :p I also enjoyed the remake of The Lady Killers with Mr Hanks :D
