this is great, ive never heard of it
does this apply in the US as well as we're renting in the summer.

In the US its more complicated as if you take no insurance you have... no insurance. So you need to buy the lowest level of insurance with a huge excess THEN use the policy on top of that. So you still save a packet.
just checked the rental company we've booked with - http://www.dollar.co.uk/packages-usa.cfm
we went for the cheapest rate which includes :
Includes Unlimited Mileage
Loss/Collision Damage Waiver
Supplemental Liability Insurance
Uninsured Motorist Protection
All Taxes and Airport and Local Fees
no mention of excess in the policy wording though.

I paid £60 but it was for worldwide cover. This meant when I was in Oz I was able to hire cars with zero excess reduction, get a cheap rate because my excess was a staggering $3300, and not care. The Europe one is cheaper.
The only exclusion is that its only valid if you are renting 150km or more from your home address, which if a flight was involved I presume you were.
I recommend it to everyone, then decline additional insurance.
I would prefer that when the car is damaged, just drop it off to them and catch a flight home, rather than having to sort out paperwork to prove the damage to the insurance company and potentially wait for ages for the money to come through.

To get the same level of protection from the hire company would have cost me an extra $750, or £325.
£60 well spent, IMHO.
