Enterprise car hire issue - damage after I dropped the car off!

I take a stack load of photos of damage before/after the rental so if anything like this comes up I can provide evidence that the car was undamaged upon return.

this is great, ive never heard of it

does this apply in the US as well as we're renting in the summer.

Yes but it's a bit different in the US. It's excess protection insurance, not full on insurance. In the US its more complicated as if you take no insurance you have... no insurance. So you need to buy the lowest level of insurance with a huge excess THEN use the policy on top of that. So you still save a packet.

I do the same. If I ever have to get a rental car, I always take a movie of the car parked in the car park, showing that there is no damage.

I also always make sure it's checked and agreed that the condition of the car is the same as it was when it was picked up.

just checked the rental company we've booked with - http://www.dollar.co.uk/packages-usa.cfm

we went for the cheapest rate which includes :

Includes Unlimited Mileage
Loss/Collision Damage Waiver
Supplemental Liability Insurance
Uninsured Motorist Protection
All Taxes and Airport and Local Fees

no mention of excess in the policy wording though.

The insurance4carhire website can probably explain it better than me but with the CDW there will be an additional excess, its this whcih the insurance protects you against.

I had a similar issue earlier this year. Returned a van with not a full tank (it wasn't full to start with). I was expecting a small charge for fuel at a silly rate (1.50pl etc).

They charged me to brim the tank, not to fill it to the original level (nearly 70 quid). When I pointed out that over the distance covered (recorded) I'd have to average <2mpg to use the quantity of fuel charged for, they gave me a full refund :)

I might be wrong, but I don't think you have excess in the USA, if you look around no car hire companies offer it. I used Dollar and Budget last year and both had 0 excess.

I paid £60 but it was for worldwide cover. This meant when I was in Oz I was able to hire cars with zero excess reduction, get a cheap rate because my excess was a staggering $3300, and not care. The Europe one is cheaper.

The only exclusion is that its only valid if you are renting 150km or more from your home address, which if a flight was involved I presume you were.

I recommend it to everyone, then decline additional insurance.

This is good in theory, but tbh it's just another layer of insurance for them to figure out a way of not paying.

I would prefer that when the car is damaged, just drop it off to them and catch a flight home, rather than having to sort out paperwork to prove the damage to the insurance company and potentially wait for ages for the money to come through.

You do that - it'll cost a huge amount of money more.

To get the same level of protection from the hire company would have cost me an extra $750, or £325.

£60 well spent, IMHO.

Crikey, £325 that's a scam, did you claim on it?

I guess if you ended up paying $3300 excess and the insurance company not paying out it won't be £60 well spent.

Nope, I didn't claim on it as I didnt damage any of the cars but the peace of mind it gave me was worth it. I was able to enjoy aggresively bashing my way through central Sydney traffic not being paranoid that somebody might scrape the car :D

LOL, I failed once, I filled up a petrol camry with diesel, and my insurance didn't cover it!

To be fair the diesel handle was green.
