Hello, I've rented a car over the Christmas period for me and my girlfriend to visit my parents. I've just checked the reservation though and it says the driver age is 30 and up, I'm 28. Do you think this will be a problem?

I clicked change the reservation and the cost of the rental goes up by nearly 4 times, there's also the option of adding a secondary drive which is 10 quid a day but it doesn't say whether this is also subject to age restrictions.

What do you think I should do? I definitely wouldn't have optionally selected that and 30 and up is the default option, I spent a lot of time going back and forth with the bookings trying to find the cheapest deal so I would have just left it by accident.

I have 3 options, 1 is to try and wing it and hope they don't kick off when it comes to picking the car up, 2 is to add a secondary driver and hope they don't kick off about my age there and 3 is to let my girlfriend, who's 31 be the main driver and then just switch when we get round the corner, she's Australian and never driven here so she won't be doing any of the main driving.

What do you guys think? Anyone have experience with this?

Cheers

If driver age needs to be 30 it will be for insurance purposes, all 3 options leave you uninsured if you drive the car so make sure you swap your girlfriend back into the drivers seat in the event of an accident.

Enterprise only require 30 and over for cars better than the fullsize, whats wrong with an Insignia or similar? Presumably you've picked some sort of Merc/Audi/Similar to encounter the 30+ age restriction?

If not - and you simply selected the wrong age but have a Group G or below, ring them up and change it. The price won't change if you dont have one of the excluded vehicle categories.

Have you tried calling them? They might be able to help whereas the online system is almost by definition more inflexible. That said I am currently renting a van with them and they wanted to charge me £3 a day extra to change from the car I'd originally hired to the van - if I cancelled the reservation and hired a van from them with the exact same details separately it worked out cheaper anyway so that's what I did but it shouldn't be an issue to call them up and see what they can do.

Definitely don't try swapping in drivers though and hoping it works out as if you're in an accident then you're going to be uninsured.

You can't just 'wing it'. I rented from them on and off for 5 months whilst I was waiting for my new car - they will check the age on the documents you provide.

As others have said the online system has no leeway - call the branch and explain and they should be able to help.

What group have you selected and for what time period? It's often cheaper to select a longer rental but return early - they refund based on a daily rate so it works out cheaper to initially rent for a week even if you only want it for 2/3 days.
