Enterprise Networking Subforum?

Hi guys,

I pretty much never go into the networks bit of the forum because it is 99% home networking crap, which has zero interest to me. However, I live and breathe enterprise networking and I know a few others here do too.

Would it be worthwhile having a dedicated section for non-home networking so that people who want to ask "proper" networking questions can get help rather than getting it lost in the home user noise of the network forum?
 
Nobody ever posts networking stuff in here and I've seen a handful of threads (like the Cisco cert thread) get moved to the Networking forum in the past.
 
The forums need their names changing.

Home networking and servers
Enterprise networking and servers

This forum is flooded by home NAS questions etc and the networking one doesn't have the right people frequenting it to answer problems in business.

agreed, I do not care for home networks.

I agree also in principle, but many home labs feature similar tech as in an enterprise setup so it's usually more appropriate to post in here. I've seen times when as soon as the word 'home' comes up, even if it's a problem with enterprise grade kit, people instantly switch off.

Worth mentioning too - r/networking, r/sysadmin, r/vmware and r/homelab are excellent subreddits I'm sure most of you are already subscribed to :)

this is true, but they are not the same when it comes to maintaining it in a production network e.g theres an issue and the first response is reboot it..
thats not what some one running an enterprise network wasnt to hear,as they will know about down times so on and so forth . maybe its jsut me an my lack of patience for people..
 
Labs are a different and much more relevant animal compared to threads about home adsl routers and so on.

I'd happily discuss someone's CCNP/IE lab issue as that is at least vaguely relevant to "proper" networking.
 
I'd agree - there's definitely some crossover, but I doubt anyone would care too much if people but small-scale business networking queries in the "Home" section, or a particularly advanced home server setup made its way into the "Enterprise" section.

It would be a good way to delineate some of the issues - I know I've asked in this forum about £15 home switches, and about £500,000 Netezza units, even if they both run a Linux variant, they're not really on the same playing field. There are some cases where a thread could end up in either section, but the chances are that the people who are advanced enough to be doing enterprise-level things in their home, are probably capable of realising it belongs in the enterprise section.
 
If you split the forums the one dedicated to the home user would be full of threads and the enterprise one would be full of elitists like the OP, who think they're above everyone else, but little in the way of content.

I disagree - this forum is quieter than others but that's fine, just moving some threads around so that they get the best responses isn't going to change the volume of threads/posts.

I'm not "elitist" because I'm more interested/able to help out people with a certain type of equipment. :rolleyes:

You are essentially asking for a niche topic, within a niche topic, I doubt there'll be much traffic. There are other forums on the 'net that deal with enterprise issues, by looking here aren't you really looking in the wrong place to begin with?
