Very new to cameras but looking for one for holidays and outdoor usage. I have a budget of up to £300 and I don't mind second hand. I've had a look and the 50mm 1.8 lens comes up a lot for beginners and overall usage. Any recommendations for a dslr within this budget?

If you have a local camera shop like London Camera Exchange you can get good deals with secondhand gear and some general advice. Different formats like Full Frame. Cropped Sensor and Micro4/3 are different sizes and weights so you can get a good fell for what to go for.

Whisky there are different camera options used, I don't recommend a 50mm 1.8 as a starting point. You're better off with a 17-50mm if buying a cropped sensor (DX) camera or 24-70mm if full frame sensor (FX).

You could try looked at used cameras on MBP, Wex or other online stores e.g. try a Nikon D7200 + 18-55mm lens should be between £300-350.

Having said that, why do you want a DSLR over a compact or bridge (non-dslr) camera?

I don't necessarily need a dslr, just researching different options. Potentially a mirrorless now I've seen what they are.

check mpb.com my recommendation is canon 5d mk III or better nikon d750 , or similar. Don't worry about 'heavy use' or shutter count. Anything with 1-200 K clicks is still good for many years yet. mirrorless wise check the canon R8 or maybe the RP with EF adaptor. It's all about the lenses. a 50 1.8 is good becuase the aperture is so large, but a 24-70 might get you a more usuable system.
