Hi guys :)

Considering the i3 build on offer at the moment for my son's first pc.

Currently he has a ps4 and plays mostly overwatch and destiny 2.

The system I am looking at is

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/ocuk...th-generation-3.6ghz-quad-core-fs-1c5-og.html

With the ssd upgrade.

I wanted to ask...

What performance should I expect from this rig on the above two games? Will the settings / fps etc all be reasonable?

Would it be easy enough to upgrade the processor further down the line with this system and what processor upgrades would be available?

How does this i3 processor compare to the ryzen chips?

I've been away from pc gaming for a decade so feel really out of touch with it all!

Will this system game ok in 1080?

Any insight or information very appreciated!!

Its a decent spec, the i3 is pretty much what the last i5's were as they have moved up to a dual core. I would however have 16gb ram as a minimum.

If I was 13 and received that I would be very happy!

It has a Coffee Lake cpu so could always upgrade to an 8400 or even higher later down the line.

Assume you are after pre-built rather than build your own?

Could go for something like this:

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £855.08 (includes shipping: £12.30)

Can overclock if you wanted to 3.7ghz on stock cooler, the RAM will run nice and fast @ 3200mhz.

With the AM4 chip you could upgrade to the last lot of chips out in a couple of years time for fairly cheap.

To be honest its not a bad deal the i3 system, even with adding an SSD it comes in at lower than the above build and includes a copy of Windows. The Ryzen in my opinion would in my opinion last a bit longer before needing to be upgraded.

Pre built I think.

I would let him upgrade ram himself later (just can't afford the 16 from the start).

What processors would this motherboard take further down the line?

The I5 coffee lake could go right in?

Thaks for your feedback :) think we will order it for him with the cheaper ssd (will that be ok for the OS?)

Also does anyone know what a decent 24 " monitor would be?

Yeah the i5 CofeeLake would drop straight in.

It might be worth ringing overclockers ans see what they can do with regards swapping the 1tb drive for say another 250gb SSD. I appreciate games can get up to 80gb each but to keep the system snappy I do think SSD is the way forward.

Regarding monitor can't help on the 24" but I have got an AOC G2778V and its great for the cash...currently £170 on the rainforest...may also be worth checking out on their as they also currently have 20% off on open box/warehouse deals.

when I was 13 I think my rig was a second hand Athlon 3200+, 7600GT and 1gb of RAM so I'm sure he'll be happy with that rig :P

Spec wise I'd personally be wanting ssd and hdd, ssd for OS/the main games and then something like a TB drive for games that don't get played as frequently, media etc.

Yes it should be fab for him. Lucky lad hah.

Ordered it with the cheapo 120gb sad. Should start him off on his pc gaming adventure well enough

mech drives are a dime a dozen these days, ive been keeping an eye out for people giving away sky boxes then ripping them open and taking drives out. usually 500gb albeit at 5900rpm but free is free :P

thats much better than my first proper gaming machine was with was the haswell platform so the i3 i had was a 2 core 4 thread and this was within 2 years ago, im 32 lol and my system cost £475 new from another store so you have chosen a much much better system and with the i3 now being quads it should be plenty for a lot of games and a 1060 6gb is always a recommendation when budget allows, if you can get an ssd included then do so otherwise either stick to what it has or get the sshdd version, people rave on about ssd, but a sata 3 hdd is still quick, its the crap and amount of crap you put on that slows them down.

lucky 13 year old.

I got that PC too for my 13 year old step son , but when i did my order it had the i5 ticked at the same price £699 ... comes too £713.10 with post and vat { ordered it on the 17 Nov 2017 }

@ 1080P max settings overwatch and destiny 2 will exceed 60FPS on that machine.

Would it be easy enough to upgrade the processor further down the line with this system and what processor upgrades would be available?

Yes. Any i5 or i7 CPU from the 8000 series would be an upgrade.

How does this i3 processor compare to the ryzen chips?

Similar IPC with slightly better gaming performance due to optimization. It's fine. It's last year's i7, tweaked, new architecture, now called i3, as i7 and i5 are now 6 core parts.
Performance is comparable (though slightly better for games) to a 4 core Ryzen with SMT.

Absolutely

Couple of thoughts- If he has a PS4 he's going to have been playing games somewhere between 720P and 1080P depending on the title (unless he has a PS4 pro). I would suggest that, if you really want to make this PC a quantitative gaming experience upgrade, you opt for a 1440P display and a GTX 1070, 1080, Vega 56, or Vega 64.

But it's not my money :)

I though I saw that when I looked at it first!! Pfft clearly we missed out there. Seeing as it was apparently a pricing error I hope they honour it for you.

Thank you!

I wish we could have gotten a better gfx option bit budget was low for this unfortunately .

I just wanted to have a reasonable base system thst over the next couple of years he can upgrade if he chooses to do so.

Thanks for you post :)

Oh would any i7 or i5 from the 8000 coffee lake series be compatible? No need for mobo change or anything just drop the replacement right in?

Ahh link not work (fair enough!!) It was a

Acer K242HLA 24" Full HD DVI HDMI Monitor

Would that be sufficient for a monitor? Have £100 Or less for one atm... :(

Search for AOC G2460VQ6 on rainforest...pick the warehouse/used - currently 20% off the £113 bringing it down to £90.

I have the 27" and more than happy with it.

Or

BenQ ZOWIE RL2455 24 inch Console e-Sports Monitor £136 down to £108

Be quick though!
