interesting story on the BBC this morning about the girl guides opening their ranks to people who identify as female. as a middle aged dad with teenagers it doesnt bother me one jot, my kids are of a time where this is seen as the norm and they openly accept and embrace this sort of thing. Their old enough to know what is and isnt correct behaviour from an individual and how to deal with it. Personally i think my own outlok would be a bit different a few years ago when my daughter was younger if her girl guide leader had been a bloke in a skirt so i am slightly torn on this one. one of the quotes i found intriguing

girls had a right to "female-only spaces".

could you imagine a scout master or boys brigade(are they still even around) leader coming out and saying something like that in regard to their organisations and not being villified for it. it seems that equality is coming full circle and not just in this instance we are seeing a bit of fightback and complaint if we aim for true equality. This is just the tip of the iceberg, could you imagine if a council announced a male only hiring policy for nursery teachers as men are underrepresented as an example or a health trust publicly declaring they would offer male nurses priority when hiring?

i really do think it does only go one way in a lot of respects and god help us with the backlash if men push for true equality where they need it

Why would you need a male only space?

I doubt any sane person would have a problem with a male only whatever as long as it’s needed and not just because women have one too.

the current climate would deem a male only space as discriminatory and exclusive wheras a female only space would be classed as empowering.

You could temporary identify as a women and go to the women's session anyway :D

This DO IT and watch the outcry of how dare you invade their space. or how dare you exclude women if you ask for a male only session.

face it if your a straight white male your a second rate citizen in the eyes of many now

That’s not an answer and again, the whole they have one so I want one thing is a stupid reason.

I’m not a woman so I can’t speak for them but I’m guessing they prefer it as it rules out most of the gym creeps.

what if i would prefer a male only Gym session so i'm not being ogled by these pervy women? surely i should get a male only session? or what if i'm gay and would prefer a gay only session? why not a furry only session? its discrimination plain and simple.

or put it simply why should a paying male member have access to less gym sessions than a female paying member?

some interesting points rasied re front line police and prison officers. the army medic one is interesting also if one of the requirements it to carry a fully grown man a certain distance then they should be able to do that. if they cant they don't get the job simple as that

I assume you mean sports as in biological males shouldn't be competing as women, which is certainly "common sense" to me.

Rather than the point that someone brought up earlier; that being that women's sport is not always exactly equal to men's sport. And in some cases that's fine. E.g. I see no reason why women shouldn't play less tennis sets than men. I don't see either "they should" or "they shouldn't" as necessarily correct. When you watch women's tennis the competition between two female competitors is the point of interest; that they don't compete in exactly the same circumstances as the men compete isn't really an issue to me.
:p

but why should women receive the same prices money as the male players when they play less sets? they've asked for equal prize money so should have to compete in the same way and provide the same level of spectacle.

I have a male friend who is a Police Officer in Glasgow and as you can imagine gets into some pretty potentially violent situations as a result. He is 100% of the belief that men and women are NOT equal in terms of their contribution in said violent situations (on the whole and on the average, there will always be exceptions). When he goes into these environments with a female officer he says he usually feels more vulnerable if it kicks off because the female is usually more slight and less able in violent situations. HOWEVER and it is a very big however, in almost all situations when he goes in with a female officer he is far more likely to get a non-violent outcome in the end. Go into the druggies flat where there has been a disturbance and two males will often end up in a physical altercation. Go in male and female and the female will be able to reason with the occupants and have them far more willing to comply.

He has no axe to grind either way and this is just his observations. Both have their very valuable place in the Police Force but there seems a lack of willingness to accept that you can be equal but different and that equality doesn't always have to equal "the same".

its a fantastically made point and pretty much sums it up
