erasing a hdd

I want to sell 2 of my hdd's but i understand a regular format doesn't get rid of everything and allows recovery. So whats the best way of completely erasing everything?

Download the demo version of Window Washer from Webroot. That has a REALLY good erase routine. It's slow (allow 48 hours for a big HDD) but it's very unlikley anyone will get anything off the HDD after that's had a go at it.

Formatting only deletes the partition tables, doesn't overwrite anything. Download the Active@ Kill Disk and do "Kill" with One pass Zeros. Ignore the fact that it says low security, it isn't! - http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17890445 .
