hi there,

a friend had a kindle he used religiously he lives to read and unfortunately the screen broke whilst he was travelling.

anyhow I am thinking of surprising him and buying him another but i dont know what would be best to get him?

are kindles back for buck or is there something better which is more value for money these days? or would you even consider a tablet like the nexus 7?

im confused so would really appreciate your help

thanks

ive not used a kindle extensively, but if its purely for reading books, i would say e-reader over tablet. ive read books using my sony e reader (the original touch one) as well as my scroll elite tablet and SGS2, the e-reader is easiest on my eyes.

As S4 has said, if the main use for the device is reading, I'd get him an e-reader. I have the Kindle Keyboard which I love, it stores more books than the Kindle and also has the keyboard. If your friend wouldn't make use of the keyboard (I use it for lots of notes etc.), then I'd just get him the Kindle. The Kindle Keyboard can also play music/audio books.

There is a touch version of the Kindle, but that's purely personal preference (Both the Touch and Keyboard have 3G models).

For a heavy reader, no question, the Kindle is much superior to a tablet. I love my tablet and use it incessantly, but for reading it gets put away and out comes the Kindle. E-ink screens are just so much easier on the eye than LCD, plus the Kindle is lighter and has much better battery life than a tablet.

Reading and only reading: Kindle.

Some reading/other media: Nexus 7.

From what you've said ("lives to read"), the Kindle would be better.

If he has a kindle and is tied into that (i.e. loads of books bought on it), then get him another Kindle, as any heavy reader would find that more useful (better to read, battery lasts a month+)..

A tablet has to be charged almost daily (or every 2-3 days), and is harder to read outside..

Bang for buck though, I bought the Missus a Kobo Touch for Christmas, the main reason was
1. It had touch (the Kindle at the time didn't) and it works really well on an e-reader
2. You can drag/drop ePubs and other easily sourced 'eBooks' on to it (In addition to the usual online 'store' method of buying books)
3. The ergonomics of the textured back works better when holding it one handed.

If you have existing content then it although can be read using a Kindle Reader app, it's not all that good (and annoyingly, but understandably, does not allow cut-paste).

I got a Kindle Touch when my Kindle 3 Keyboard gave up, so I'm a dedicated user, they are excellent for travel reading as they go a long time between charges and the screen is clear even in the brightest sunlight as well as being light and easy to use.

The downside is (a) Amazon purchased Kindle content is expensive and often lacking in format, you don't save much on e-books, and (b) PDFs are next to useless on a Kindle, even more so for the smaller screen of the Touch, and its often difficult to convert them into more readable formats.

For the e-reader if he is tied into the Amazon system then yeah another Kindle would make perfect sense.

There are rumours that a Kindle 'Glow' with built-in LED lighting will be coming out this month though, only vague rumours though so it wouldn't stop me from buying a new Kindle now.
