My fathers Kindle 3 has come to an abrupt smashing on floor end after many years so I need to find him a replacement.

Its only needed for reading novels so not after anything too fancy that does web browser/emails/etc.

Open to other brands doesn't have to be another kindle only requirement is that I can email books to it for him.

Thanks. :)

I don't think anything beats the Kindle Paperwhite in ease of use and getting books onto it.
I've now had every generation of Kindle except the Voyager now and have no plans to upgrade until the tech evolves.

I have a Sony PRS 950 and it's brilliant. It's the best book reader I've owned.

Sony pulled out of the market and their support for their own products was diabolical anyway. I fully regret getting a Sony one, the only reason I still have it is because it runs Android so at some point I'll root it and try and make it useful somehow.

I bought one of the basic Nooks when they were selling them all off for £30. The screens on all the basic readers are the same so there isn't a lot of difference. I use it to read books I get from the library. Not sure if kindle can do that but kobo can I think.

I have a 505 but when I had to replace it the only realistic option for me was a Kindle (voyager in my case).

I couldn't find anywhere near me to look at the Nooks in the flesh, and as you say Sony have pulled out of the market and even before that their support for their readers was pretty poor*, which was a shame as the 505 was a lovely bit of kit for it's time and I still think it feels far more quality than any of the other readers I've seen.

*IIRC the DRM support for the 505 was dropped quite early.

I've got a kindle paperwhite*, and I can definitely recommend it - getting books on and off via the wbsite couldn't be easier (I haven't tried emailing them but I assume it works), and it is great to read on. Only minor niggle for me is that you can't actually turn the light off, just reduce it to a very low level.

*From the MM actually :)

The Kindle Paperwhite gets the most consistently high scoring and favourable reviews of all current e-readers. Source: spent a ridiculous amount of time reading a million reviews prior to purchase for mother in law :/

Have had nearly all the kindles and the voyage is definitely the best - just not worth the price. I would go for the paper white 2.

Currently in the flat we've got:

1 x Kindle DX
3 x Kindle Keyboard 3g's
1 x Kindle Paperwhite 3g 1st Gen
1 x Kindle Paperwhite 3g 2nd Gen
1 x Kindle Voyage 3g
1 x iRiver thing

My preference is still the DX and the Keyboard. Hardware page turn buttons win. Touchscreens aren't great for ereaders imo.

That said, the screen on the Voyage is superb, 2nd gen paperwhite is almost as good and costs significantly less.

I held off buying my Kindle until the Voyage simply because that was the first model that had a significantly better screen than the 505, and had some form of button for the page turn.
