I've put up with an old fake leather seat from Argos for way too long and it's now feels like sitting on bench. Apart from being uncomfortable, you can't adjust the angle of the back so I'm constantly tipped backwards or sitting up without support which makes my back ache more than normal.

What's out there other than the obvious Herman Miller seats?

Are there any seats that are guaranteed to be great or is it going to be a matter of testing for myself? Are there any recommendations for stores in the North West?

Budget is about £700 but I only want to spend if I'm buying quality, I have zero interest in buying into a brand. If I can get something great for £300 it would be preferred. I've already discounted the ikea Marcus style seats as I don't think they're adjustable enough.

If it's relevant I'm 6ft, 98kg and have a long torso/short outside legs

There are thousands of spec me a PC too, sometimes new questions are asked and new answers are given, no harm done is there? I have trawled through a significant number of old threads and now I'm here, asking questions to get answers I couldn't find in old threads

Zzzzzz
This is a forum for users to ask questions not look up and hoping to come across an answer.

@op I have the ikea Markus I know you already have written that of the list. But if they is anything you want asking I can do my best in helping. Apart from this chair I can't advise anymore this the best chair I have owned to date.

Thanks for the replies I'll have a proper read tomorrow evening.

It sounds a lot but most nights I get in from work and go straight to the office to work, usually for hours. Most wouldn't bat an eyelid spending similar amounts of money on a wooden frame wrapped in fabric I mean a sofa! I hardly ever sit on the sofa so this chair is effectively my sofa, that's how it's getting sold to the Mrs anyhow ;)

I was being a jerk. Sorry about that.

I have just bought the Gotham chair from Staples. We have a large Staples and Ikea stores in Edinburgh I had a budget of a couple of hundred quid so went to both these stores and tried each and every chair until I found something that I felt comfortable with.

This is something you really need to try before you buy so buying on spec online was not an option for me.

At my office there was a six month chair trial to determine the best model (can't remember all models but there was an Interstuhl AirPad which was voted second). There was no budget restriction and there was a group of six chairs on trial. The Herman Miller Embody won easily. I've been using it for 18 months and the best thing I can say about it is that I don't notice it.

I'm not sure on the pricing individually but I imagine we got a deal given we bought around a thousand of them.

Herman Miller chairs are obvious cos they're good.

There's loads of them out there second hand, especially size B, which might be the right size for you. You'd easy get a near new used chair for £300. I have a C which makes it somewhat more difficult to get a good second hand one, but I got one for £300 in the end with some aluminium parts.

John Lewis do a size B you can go and sit in.

We have Herman Miller Aerons in the office and it has got to be the most overrated chair ever. Yes, it is comfy for any number of hours, but they squeak like hell after few years, they break (snap with sharp edges), modular armrests are always slowly sliding down across the week, headrests have the most shocking build quality on this side of China and locking mechanisms stop working etc. At that price, they are just disappointment.

I see it this way - we have this whole ergonomic, lasting chair business figured out for a long time - why is it such a challenge to furniture manufacturers to make comfortable, fully adjustable, durable office chair, if each car has one. And they look much better most of the time as well. Just mount car chairs to pneumatic basis and you're done. Who's with me?

I have a Herman Miller Mirra which I bought after visiting Herman Millers head office and trying them all. I chose it as it is an improved Aeron (put simply) but doesn't carry the same price as some of the bits are cheaper to make and it isn't their halo seat. For me the advantage was the front of the sitting area can be moved to provide extra support, a feature the Aeron doesn't share. I've had it for months and its been good and has helped remove all of my back issues, which is what a good chair will do.

Not my experience at all. I've had one for 2 years. I sit in it for hours and hours, for days on end. I work from home. Sounds like your chairs need servicing.

This is the thing with a good chair, you shouldn't notice it. It's not supposed to feel like a La-Z-Boy; it's something that needs to support you and encourage good posture for hours on end.
