Last I remember Ho Boa engines were pretty reliable.
Where you running over-lean?

Not tinkered in Nitro for over a year now, moved on to Petrol.

i sorta hit a small speedhump at full pelt and lost the car flipping various times...and then smoke as the rear end was melting!

Easily, the engine heads are quite exposed to get air over them.

That could be why then. Although I would have expected a bent fin or at least an obvious scratch on the head.

Maybe it was a bit weak anyway and the shock of flipping a few times just pushed it over the edge

that wouldnt of borked it that badly, it was forever doing that on bmx track, the top is cushined with fuel tubing and spoiler helps...

im thinking of these to get it running again

As is the engine actually, Hong Nor engines are meant to be very reliable from what I've heard. What car is it? Bigger engine so will put a bit more load on the powertrain, but shouldn't really be an issue coming from a .28. You'll lose out a bit on top speed as well: larger engines don't tend to rev as high as smaller ones.

If you can find some local clubs/tracks, you might well find they have a section on their forums for buying/selling cars & gear.
www.maxbashing.com is one example (near me, Guildford area).

Otherwise I should think ebay is probably your best bet.
