Hey guys,
I recently built my new system (E4300, DS3, Geil 1GB Ultra) and tried to overclock by a small amount using the easytune software that came with my motherboard. i overclocked from 1808mhz to 1989mhz. effectively trying to increase by 200mhz. i raised the fsb to i think 220. it was fine then a blue screen kept coming up saying windows has been shut down to prevent serious damage. it didnt like the overclock one bit. its back to normal now on standard speed. why did this happen? is there any settings i should have changed e.g. vcore? standard vcore is something between 1.152 and 1.280 according to cpu-z. in bios though its listed as 1.31 standard?

I'll leave the discussion on vcores to the people with Intel chips, however blue screens, lock ups and random reboots are part and parcel of overclocking.. try to see them as a 'must try harder' note for the 'teacher' ;)

true, but i was wondering why a small overclock would cause such system instability?

i really cant afford to have the computer out of action for long for the sake of a small overclock such as that

True, it is odd. In the past I have had certain setups that had 'instability zones' where they would just not settle, yet I could push further and find another stable point. Not sure if this applies you your setup of course.

thats a low vcore

is it a retail 4300? on the side of the box it should say the rated max voltage, probably 1.35, think its the same on all c2d. i am running my e6600 at 3.6, 9x400 on a vcore of 1.425, but som other people are up as high as 1.55 but generally on watercooling!

there is an excellent article on tomshardware.com about overclocking the 4300, maybe worth a read along with the other C2D overclocking articles on there. invaluable information. Think they are working with a DS3 aswell.

thanks for all your help. will do some serious reading up before i attempt any more overclocking.

just one thing? how do you guys normally overclock? i mean through bios directly or is there a program that does it all for you. that easytune i'm not too keen on as i dont know what its doing to the vcore.

and yes its a retail e4300

Panik: disable things like speedstep in the bios, my 4300 is running at 1.07v and 1.2ghz by default in windows because of speedstep, disabling it makes it run at 1.8ghz and the full 1.35v it requires. I can overclock it to 2.8ghz before it needs more juice. 3ghz requires 1.45v ,and due to what I believe is a faulty mobo, I got I cannot test it any higher than that.

thanks for the info mate. what is speedstep though? can't say i have come across it before...
Known as Cool n Quiet for AMD cpus, it lowers the clock speed and voltage when the machine is idle to cut down on heat and noise.

Disable it, then overclock in the bios. The programs you need are cpu-z and orthos.
