ok this is only happening when I try and archive some files using winrar or 7zip.

The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.

The error is getting more frequent and it's getting annoying. I haven't done anything different to the PC I can't see any other process that can be using it either.

Where are the files? Need more info.

You're not trying to rar up the whole of C:\ or anything like that are you?

What filetypes are they?

I've been archiving all my music folders 1 folder at a time I've done over 500GB already but it only started to error 3 days ago but I think it's the sata cable that's causing the errors.

I'm thinking this because it's on the same sata cable that I was using on another drive that died 2 weeks ago for no apparent reason. Now I didn't even think to replace that cable the other week and started to use it again on another drive then this drive started playing up so I tested it with seatools which when tested it failed a short dst test everytime and told me it had bad sectors which I fixed straight away. I've removed the cable about 15mins after starting this topic last night and since then I haven't had any errors (crosses fingers).

Music files typically aren't really compressible.. what format are they?

Better off just doing a robocopy.

Ditch the cable if you think it's faulty.

I'm just rar'ing them m8 they don't really need to be compressed I'm uploading them all to my cloud server and it's easier to have them rar'd than havimg them in folders.

Is there a script/batch file for robocopy where it will just rar the individual folder one at a time instead of me right clicking and clicking on add to archive.

The cable has been ditched.

Robocopy is just a source to destination copying tool, doesn't create archives.

Pointless in telling me to just do a robocopy then when I did say I was archiving the files to upload.

Restart the pc and try again. Sometime files can be left 'open' untill a reboot.

This was happening straight away soon as I tried to archive the files and it was only doing it on that drive not any other hence the sata cable getting ditched.

Sorry about the abrupt reply last night m8 wasn't intended it was late and I had a beer too many....just thought you would have guessed because I said I was archiving then with winrar something I should have mentioned I was uploading them in my 1st post.
