Had to reformat my band new build after about a month of use...everything was fine, only had to reformat because someone had downloaded something very dodgy and decided formatting would have just been the easier way of dealing with it

Put CD in and started it installing and it just kept coming up with errors, not being able to copy from CD

Sent the CD back and they tested it and replaced it, but that one doesnt work either, same error, also used my mates CD that i used when i first installed and that doesnt work

Its different things everytime that wont copy though,

What could it be?

CD Drive/Hard Drive??

I did post about this when it first went and had some help...tried the RAM which seems fine

I dont have another CD Drive or HDD though to test it really, thats about all i can think it could be and im trying to find someone with a spare one i could use

What else could it be if not the above two?

Nope im just installing windows XP

I managed to get hold of a cd drive, but it has the old connections and i dont have any of those cables LOL

a seperate HDD should be easier to get a hold of

Just annoying that everything is brand new and something has died LOL

I've had errors before when trying to install XP , a common problem is a dirty CD , next to a faulty CD drive , or if you get a lot of blue screens ..........bad sectors on the hard drive. If problems persist scan your drive for errors .May take a while if youv'e got a large one ,[hard drive that is !].

well im sure its not the CD ive tried 2 from the company i bought it from and another from a mate, and the same thing with them all so pretty sure its not that

CD Drive i need to get a hold of one, before i formatted i had installed stuff like HL2/Fable (4 cds) all the sims etc - will definatly be trying this next though

How c`an i scan mu HD for errors without having windows, or am i going to have to scan it on another computer, as im on a laptop for the time being :D

thank you very much for the help though, have made me worry a little less about it being something hugely major :)

It could also be either the CD cable or HDD cable. Try swapping them with others/spares if you have them or be very nice to your friends for a while. ;-)

You could scan your disk with chkdsk in safe mode.

cheers mate am downloading that ultimatebootcd and will try putting it on my USB stick and try from there...will let you know the resuls when i get round to doing it :)

just made that CD and its not recognised when i put it in

just found my mobo xpressrecovery2 disk...decided to stick that in just to see what it does and it says "not enough HDD space to create backup"

reckon its the HDD thats died then?

Try and get a copy of Hirrens boot CD . This is a fantastic bit of kit ,boot from this CD and you have a wealth of utilities , disk checking ,hard drive checking ,bad sector checking ,and lots ,lots more .HTH

have just had a browse but dont seem to be able to find anywhere to get it

Have you considered the issue could be the memory? Have you overclocked the pc? Try with stock speeds and test your ram (if hard disk is ok). If you have more than 1 stick of ram, try installing with one or the other installed only, it's possible the memory is corrupting the files so they cant be written.

not overclocked at all, the RAM is what it was when it came

Have tried doing it with only 1 stick in at a time, tried it with both and it did the same thing each time, might give it another go though just to make sure

Another reason to get Hirrens , it can check out your memory too. I downloaded it [hirrens] from another forum many months ago but just recently started to use it.

I've checked a few of my regular sites and it's gone now , Rapidshare only host a file for 3 months and then its deleted . I have the original file somewhere , it was zipped or rarred . I'm not sure how big the file was , I'll see if I can dig it out and check .

Found it , Hiren's BootCD 8.6 .It is a ISO image and it was rarred & zipped . Downloaded in November 2006 , file size 65.6mb .To big to send , I'm afraid . I'll do a search and see if it is available somewhere else.
