This isn't really all that relevant to tattoos or piercings, in the same way that doing heroin doesn't really have much to do with smoking cigarettes.

You are wrong with both examples: the first are all examples of self-mutilation, and the second are both examples of recreational drug use. Whether someone does or likes something does not change the category it falls into. It's perfectly reasonable to class this silly idea with tattoos and piercings.
