I use to have a desktop PC I remember why drives shifted from IDE to SATA, their was a slight speed bump, but hardly a huge increase.

Thing is now Im in the market for an External Hardrive

my question is will an eSata really provide that much speed say over a Firewire 800?

Yes because a drive conencted via eSATA is making use of the full SATA bandwidth and so sustained read/write speeds will be much higher.

That depends on the drive you're using but it should perform exactly the same as if it were plugged in internally using SATA. It should definately be faster than firewire.
