Im studying a unit on my degree course called " The Troubles with youth"

im just about to start my first essay for this unit entitled " Why does imprisonment not work for young people" (or something similar)

im struggling to find things to put in it as its a 3000 word essay

so far im thinking:

History of prison
Borstals
Young offenders institutes- aims of, what they do, what goes on within them
Young peoples attitudes towards police
alternatives to imprisonment
youth justice- courts etc
The idea that youths can "grow out of" crime

can any1 think of anything else i may or could add into it. this is the first essay im struggling with so far this year and it probably the first one with the simplest title

thanks in advance

what's your course?

also

" The Troubles with youth"

One of the troubles with youths today is their inability to do their own work.

i didnt say i was unable to do my own work. i said i was struggling with content, you can see for yourself im trying!

more fool me for expecting some serious, helpful people to be on here

course is Criminology

Are you at the University of Manchester? (judging from your location).

Because if you are, you could look on the University Library website for publications and thesis papers with certain keywords i.e. Imprisonment, Youth etc. Go through the SearchIt application on the main page. Plus you'll be able to reference them:)

they are pampered in prison
bad parenting
people that care give the wrong advice (instead of "dont worry about it" should be "what are you thinking? sort yourself out!") if you know what I mean 'arry

i have 10 books from the library. and have used various government websites. i seem to be on a bit of a roll at the minute so shall see how much more i can get done tonight.

thanks to those that put in useful comments

to the others: way even bother posting? (thats a rhetorical question:rolleyes:)

you could do an experiment? or go find dmpoole he works with kids in juvie.

Tbh i say get some first years, put some cake out in the room tell them not to eat the cake, when they eat the cake lock em up for a week, let them out and see i they take the cake again!

Might want to introduce elements of youth subculture etc, and consider the reasons they end up becoming delinquent and become involved in crime - that element fundamental to making imprisonment 'work' for them in the first place.

Third year Police Studies student here. :)

ahhh thank you very much. thats the sort of thing i was looking for. i think that whether prison works or not depends on the environment they return to upon release. if they go straight back to where they were before its more than likely they will return to their old ways.

Good point, and this is why post-release support is so important. Just doesn't always seem to have a huge amount of commitment (from both the organisations involved, and the people who would benefit from it).

there's a police studies course now?

You thinking of join up after uni then? might be of help posting about that in some of the threads asking about joining the force.

Personally I probably won't join the police as a police officer - not just yet anyway. Currently my rough plan is to apply to Thames Valley as support staff, try and get something in crime analysis or crime prevention strategy development. Need to start doing my research into it though, seeing as I don't have much time left.

Really interesting course though, I wouldn't change it for the world. Considering everything I know about the police now (both as a result of my course and just my own knowledge), I can't imagine how daunting and perhaps foolish it must be for some people who just decide to apply without really know what they're getting themselves into.

Wow that's a nice essay!

I'd include:

- Youth culture and influence
- Leniency of law
- Social aspects ie groups D and E more likely to offend (could probably fit this in culture and influence)
- No provision in prison or punishment that makes them reflect on their crime

You must have Uni resources online, read up on some journals, check some library books. This is the only way to expand ideas!
