***Essential Android Apps - ICS 4.0 Edition***

Diceplayer has been updated to hide the nav buttons completely when viewing videos.

It's a must have app for all GN users as it's the only video player that offers hardware acceleration for a lot of the more popular codecs. I've not found a video that it trips up on yet.

Dice is not free and for a video player it's way too expensive at over £3.

MX Video Player supports fast software decode and hardware decode options - Does that not work on the GN? It's also better featured UI wise.

I couldn't get MX player working unfortunately. Unsupported android version :(

Besides, we shouldn't be afraid of paying for good quality software. It will encourage the creation of better quality apps in the market, something which a lot of people complain about. The stats that show ios app revenue share vs android app revenue share are frankly quite embarrasing.

end of the day, i dont have to prove anything. You dont know me in person and god forbid if i am telling a lie i am only fooling myself, however if i am telling the truth, you lot are the ones who look like the fools. And im practically the "only" person in this forum that knows who the fool is :D so keep "slagging" me off as you wish hehe because i personaly dont care if you believe me or not lol

:D :p

Hopefully due to how well stock android looks now, more apps will follow the same unique style and therefore all be uniform across the board and be a bit more polished looking. Unlikely though :(

If you didn't care you wouldn't keep going on about it, saying you don't care. You'd just ignore it because as you say, you're the only one who truly knows 100% whether you're a coder or not, unless you suffer from delusions of grandeur. :)

im not going on about it, its others who are. im just responding with a smiley all the time like this :D

I know who the fools are hehe

The problem woth some android apps is that many companies do a crap cheap "iphone" port of there game/app trying to make the app and game function and look exactly like the iphone version. this is the wrong approach as the UI design pattern for both iphone and android are vastly different.

i found that Dice player had better playback on MKV files. I'm not certain if this is universal with MKVs but the ones I tested were definitely better in Dice Player.

I really welcome the change to full screen mode. I'd like to see this implemented with more apps down the line. As intuitive and useful as the on-screen buttons are, a lot of applications don't require them and I would like more options for them to be hidden.

I think the major ICS apps will come out in a couple months when the take up is at its most. We were looking at a way to stream iPlayer over a data connection, then use wifi direct to stream that to a google tv or tablet. There is also the potential for multiplayer games over wifi with no server, meaning really low operating costs for ICS games. We can also see some things like facebook for corporate environments using wifi direct video calls, so on a company network simply hitting facebook and then a contact and having a direct wifi call, it will probably be great for low lag and near perfect audio video sync. One big thing i am looking forward to is file transfers, for more security, simply saying to someone, im going to send you a file, no email, no dropbox, just direct peer to peer secure transfers. This could be great for mass events, if you want to give out prizes, just push a button and people could receive an image with a ticket number or something.

There are lots of apps that can be made just from this one feature, with all the other features that are coming along the way, ICS has a lot of potential. I cant wait to see what people come up with, i know we are coming up with some cool stuff over the next few months.

BTW, BBC news app should be out early next week

There is little point in doing that because there will still be apps that are designed to run purely on tablets because of the screen size/resolution. It will be interesting to see what will happen to those. We’ll most probably have to wait for Jelly Bean to do that.

ICS core UI is listed as Android 3.x. Honeycomb should disappear fairly quickly leaving a unified UI framework for phones and tabs.

And people wonder why this thread is turning into crap. give it a rest. boo hoo you dont believe me, who cares. move on or make another thread if u wish to discuss whether i am a legit android developer or not.

Thanks Mr/Mrs Troll

Would it be a good idea for the OP to keep an updated list of apps that don't work at all on ICS too?

SMS Backup and Simple Calendar for example. Two I use a lot :(

Thanks for the Natwest app also, once again long overdue. Any info as to whether credit card support will be added?
