Hi, got a BB Bold 2 yesterday, absolutely love it!

Apart from the typical facebook, msn apps and the autolock app I have, are they're any must have apps? Preferably free.

Also, I know the phone has GPS but does it allow it to be used as a Sat nav? If so, how?

Movies - Latest movies, boxoffice info etc

Facebook - Great fb application with alerts.

Viigo - RSS application that comes with a whole bunch of feeds set up and you can add/remove/edit your own.

Ubertwitter - Good twitter application, very quick.

Tube Map - London underground map application with live updates.

Opera 5 - Better browser then the standard blackberry one. You'll need to access the download link using your BIS as it wont let you download it over wifi for some reason.

Google Mobile, Sync & Maps - Maps is better than the blackberry one it comes with. Sync is useful for backing up your contacts, calendars etc

Nimbuzz - All in one instant messaging application with alerts.

Poynt - A bit like places directory, useful for finding local restaurants, shops, cinemas.

Shazam - Music identifier/tagger.

Time - Time magazine's own mobile application.

iTookThisOnMyPhone - Photo uploader.

Also you may want to get the latest version of blackberry messenger.

There's a sat nav application called Telenav that you might want to try, not sure if it needs an additional bluetooth gps unit or if it functions with the built-in one.

The inbuilt gps will let you use sat nav programs.

Apps wise at the moment i have these ones and couldnt be without them in all honesty:

Google maps..self explanatory
Google synch...over the air synching of contacts, reminders and calendar
Meterberry...app that lets you see what your battery discharge rate is along with memory..few other features as well
Blackberry app world
crackberry website launcher
Shazam
Quicklaunch...allows u to set your left convenience key to any number of apps etc
berrytorch...lets you use the led as a flashlight
tube maps
berrybuzz...lets you change the colour of your leds for all type of notifications
Poynt
Aerize alerts...gives you the option to have your sms, email or texts pop up in the main screen
Filescout...a file explorer
scoremobile...keeps me up to date on scores around the sports world
GPSed...a gps tracking app.
Berryweather...a weather app that lets me know what kind of weather we are having or will be having...awesome app.

a lot of the apps i have are paid versions and some are free...i dont have a problem paying for apps as long as they are useful

Also head over to my the link in my sig...loads of info about apps, wallpapers and themes there...as well as help and advice.

quickpull. Simulates removing the battery and putting it back, since a BlackBerry wont actually reboot unless you do that.

Another vote for Quickpull here, in addition to this I found Viigo and Ubertwitter essential. Poynt was great when needing to find the number for a local store/takeaway :p

With the new 9700 Bold 2 and Storm2 you dont really need quickpull...both devices have double the memory now so memory leaks are a thing of the past...ive had both my BB's for over a month ie 9700 and Storm2 and only time i reboot the phones is when i delete or install a new app which requires a reboot...otherwise ive gone a few weeks with minimum of memory leakage;).

Also another thing to remember is that Quickpull doesnt seem to work very well with the new OS 5.

Or you could try holding Alt + Right Shift + Delete instead to do a hard reboot of the phone.

If you want to refresh the appworld - myworld list of applications installed then hold Alt and type R then S then T within the myworld screen.

Gonna Sit myself here and take notes... Lookin at getting a Storm 2 or Bold when I upgrade in 2-3 weeks :)

Currently I am using:

Ubertwitter
Facebook
Weatherbug
Quickpull
Google Maps
Dictionary.com
Blackberry and Crackberry App stores
Berrybuzz
Capture it

All of them are free and have all come in very handy. I previously tried a lot of the other mentionned apps out but found that they are very America specific. Maybe things have changed since i tried them.

any decent apps to make it vibrate simultaneously with messages/calls? don't really like the default of having to vibrate before it rings

If your device is using OS5 then it has that option by default..if your using an OS earlier than 5 then bigtincan buzzme i think its called has that option...there are a few other apps that have that option as well as having other options...have a look in the crackberry app store or BB app world.

i've got the 8520 running on os4.6. i've checked the crackberry forum and there's a sticky thread for os5 for the 8530, would that work on the 8520? they look exactly the same?

No it wont work as they are different devices...8530 is cdma and 8520 is GSM...so putting a 8530 OS onto yours will probably fubar it.

Seems like OS5 isnt official for the 8520 but you can install leaked versions of the OS if you wish...nothing wrong with leaked versions..only major difference is that no operator has made them official...you could just wait for it to become official though if you wish.

AS your running a 4.6 OS..heres an app that will ring and vibrate at the same time: http://software.crackberry.com/product.asp?id=34176&n=BuzzMe-Standard

Just add it to your cart...its free but just a basic version..make sure you choose the non storm edition.

cheers - i ended up installing the leaked os5, was pretty straight forward.. a lot easier than i thought it'd be..

vibration working faultlessly. :)

Good stuff...yeh installing new Os updates is pretty easy as long as you backup all your data first then install the OS...once installed then just restore the backup and your good to go.

Anybody point me to a step-by-step guide to installing apps on an 8520?

Well you either install them OTA ie over the air which means you go to the download link and download and install from there.

Or you go to the apps link on your pc and download an ALX file, which then you connect your BB to your pc and open the BB deskmanager software and install it through there.

But ive never had to install an app via desk manager...all my apps are downloaded and installed via OTA...simple and fast.
