Anyway, for now, I've decided to opt for an intermediary option

From the investigation I've done, it certainly seems a lot better than microwaved stuff (obviously you get out, what you put in).

At some point I think I might opt for this upgrade:

I've made a few batches recently in a heavy based pan on the hob, shaking it regularly. That Whirley Pop pan looks like a logical upgrade from that so should be good.
